Austin City Council 2026 Ballot Propositions
Shall the City Charter be amended to delete language providing that the City Council shall meet at least once each week?
The amendment would remove the weekly meeting rule, letting council set a schedule that fits its workload. Since council usually meets every other week and cancels about half its scheduled meetings, the change could mean fewer cancellations.
The amendment would remove the charter’s requirement that the City Council meet at least once a week. The charter would no longer set a minimum number of meetings, though an ordinance would still set the schedule. If meetings happen less often, each one may have more agenda items, making it harder for the public to take part.
Article II. - THE COUNCIL
§ 12.- MEETINGS OF THE COUNCIL.
The council shall meet in regular session at the City Hall [at least once each week] at such time as may be prescribed by ordinance [unless otherwise ordered by the council for reasons to be documented in the minutes]. Special meetings of the council shall be called by the city clerk upon written request of the mayor or two members of the council. All meetings shall be open to the public except as may be authorized by the laws of the State of Texas.
