Intern with Hospitalist Service Line Administrator
Clinical Operations
Evaluating operations at PAT Clinics at Methodist, University, North and West
Interviewing all stakeholders involved in the process
Using the lean methodology, Pareto charts and time logs to collect data in the clinic on operations and the process
After I collect all data on issues, conditions, and workflow, I then am presenting a report with recommendations to improve efficiency, patient experience, and provider workload
Attending all administrator, operational, and clinician meetings to gain an understanding of the service line role, hospital operations, and issues and goals for the department
I have several opportunities to shadow administrators, project managers, and other roles I have interest in
Communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders individually and in group settings using verbal, written, and electronic modes of communication. Work on the project and communicate my findings
Demonstrate and gain transferable skills in a professional work environment. This is my first experience in healthcare and want to learn what this role entails and how providers/hospitals operate.
Determine professional fit within a health-related organization. Identify what role/positions interest me.
During this internship experience, I have met all of the learning objectives I set for myself in the beginning. My project has allowed me to talk to stakeholders involved, and present recommendations of my findings. I am gaining project management experience and learning about clinical operations. I was able to shadow a project manager in System Health Solutions and learned about population health/community health and found the exact fit for me.
Gained project management experience
Learning lean methodology and being a systems thinker to make a change in processes
Learning about the different departments within IU Health, as well as, the many roles in some of those areas
I offered a new, fresh perspective while shadowing at the clinics and have offered recommendations for process improvement
I have met several new people in different roles and have learned about the different career paths to becoming an administrator
A few of my professional weaknesses are underdeveloped skillsets, especially project management skills that are needed to advance to a director or administrator role. I do need to gain more experience leading and managing people to help me grow as an effective leader. In order to improve these skills, I plan to get project management/leadership certificates to gain more understanding of how to be successful in that role. A great strength I have is the ability to grasp new concepts quickly, and once hired, I'll learn through employment training.
What we learned in the classroom laid the foundation of principles, methods, and processes we will encounter in the real world. However, having that hands-on experience and seeing what you learned in practice has helped me to understand those ideas. The service line administrator role is responsible for provider compensation, so I have had a crash course in FTEs and understand how they work. As part of my project, I am using the lean methodology to understand the process to make necessary changes to the clinic processes. I wish I had taken the Lean in Healthcare course, it would have helped me understand how to evaluate systems skillfully.
