Goal 4
Goal 4: Engage with diverse perspectives in order to cultivate cultural competence and an appreciation of differences
Outcome 1: Analyze current and historical international issues and aspects of global culture
In this journal I looked at Ekstein’s “Journey to the Interior” and Fosse’s Cabaret. I
found the theme that each shared was people becoming desensitized to what was going
around them. Cabaret is set in Berlin, Germany and shows the beginnings of the Nazi Party.
At first, this is a very small part of the movie as it doesn’t happen in the club itself, but
outside of it. However, at the end of the movie, there are many nazi soldiers in the cabaret
watching the performance, which itself is about a Jewish person who ends up in striped
clothes wearing a star. The movie was released in 1972, which leaves a 27 year difference
between the two. It provided a good example of public attitude during the beginnings of
WWII.
Outcome 4: Appraise issues from multiple viewpoints
For this assignment, I reflected on my persuasive speech which argued the opposite of what
you believed in. In this case, I believed that athletes made too much money, so I argued that they
deserve it. As stated before, I did believe that athletes made too much money. My reflection
highlights the fact that it was “easy to slip into the mindset of believing they deserve their pay.” I
believe that was because I actually researched the topic and why they got paid so much instead
of just looking at a dollar amount. At the time I was definitely thinking how an athlete got paid
upwards to $100 million to play sports which is such a crazy number. But I can now break down
where that money might be coming from, which includes image rights, ticket sales, brand deals,
etc. It is their job and they put their body on the line to participate, so I did see where their
deserved their pay. This assignment definitely had me looking at both viewpoints of the
argument and I have changed my opinion on the matter.
The ethical dilemma I chose to research was the implementation of universal healthcare
in the United States. In this presentation I had to research both sides of the argument in order
to form a well-rounded opinion. I do believe that I didn’t fully appraise the issue from
multiple viewpoints. Going into the research I already had a belief that I thought was right,
so I do think I focused more on that than the opposing side. However, in this case, it was
also way harder to find people in opposition to having universal healthcare. I believe that
with what I have, I was able to look at the issue from both perspectives.
