Goal 2: Exhibit a commitment to community awareness, involvement, and service
Outcome 2: Reflect on a civic effort which addresses civic responsibility and citizenship
Outcome 1: Enact solutions to real-world problems for individuals and society
I was able to complete outcome 1 with the course Hon 391H, Community Problem Solving. For this course, I had to find a problem in the community and solve it. The problem I chose to solve was littering in parks. I decided to go to Fort Mandan, Fort Clark, and the Knife River Indian Village to pick up litter. I also created various social media sites to detail what I had found and ways to prevent or diminish littering. When faced with a problem of littering, I enacted my solution of going to pick up the litter.
I was also able to complete outcome 1 with my presentation from Hon 250H, Foundations of Leadership. This project made us look at ethical dilemmas and research and find potential solutions. I researched the implementation of universal healthcare in the United States. Healthcare costs are something that many people go into debt over. I was able to find out why it was unwanted by some and wanted by others. My solution fell flat as it was just the belief that the problem should be solved. However, by educating myself about the topic, I am in turn able to educate others and through that educating, the chances to achieve universal healthcare rises.
Outcome 2: Reflect on a civic effort which addresses civic responsibility and citizenship
In Honors 191H, The Honors Community, I wrote a paper about poverty and food insecurity. In this paper, I listed the various organizations that helped citizens who were facing these problems. I researched this topic in Fall of 2020 and was unfortunately unable to volunteer my time due to the coronavirus pandemic. This research project helps complete outcome 2 due to its reflection of civic responsibility and citizenship.
I was also able to complete outcome 2 with my portfolio from Hon 395H, Citizenship and Service. This portfolio was a continuation of my volunteer project from Hon 391H. This portfolio can complete outcome 2 due to the reflection of my volunteering experience in which I focused on civic responsibility and citizenship. For this project I wanted to focus on parks within Minot itself. This portfolio also allows a look through my different thoughts as the project went on and how I ended up perceiving citizenship and service.
