Hello,
I am an ASHA certified and SD state licensed Speech-Language Pathologist. I fill my days with work as an online instructor in the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant program at Mitchell Technical Institute in Mitchell, SD, teaching courses in SLP assisting, phonetics, anatomy & physiology, language disorders, AAC, observation, and clinical management. Although I spend most of my day in front of a computer, I have a ton of interaction with my students and other college staff members. I love working with adult learners and using technology to provide engaging and interactive learning opportunities for future SLPAs.
I am the author of the Skill-based Assessment of Core Communication Skills for grades K – 2 and 3 – 5. available from www.dynamic-resources.org. These 2 instruments are non-standardized assessment and progress monitoring tools that I developed during my years as a school-based SLP. They helped me to clearly identify communication strengths and needs in students and to effectively communicate those skill levels to educators and parents during IEP meetings and other student conferences.
Prior to my current teaching position, I enjoyed 12 years as a public school speech-language pathologist and 9 as a speech-language pathologist in acute care and inpatient rehabilitation health care settings.
I am a proud past president of the South Dakota Speech-Language-Hearing Association and past member of the ASHA SLP Advisory Council. I am blessed to have received the SDSLHA Volunteerism award in 2005 and the SDSLHA Honors of the Association in 2012 for co-chairing the SDSLHA Legislative committee, which obtained SLP and SLPA licensure for SD in 2012. I continue to be active in state and national volunteerism, serving on the SDSLHA 2017 Convention Planning Committee and co-chairing the Language and Learning in School-Age Individuals topic committee for the 2017 and 2018 ASHA conventions.
I have published research in the areas of dysphagia and assessment of neurogenic communication disorders. My current interests lie in school-based issues including language and literacy assessment and treatment, online instruction, and supervision of support personnel. I frequently present continuing education offerings addressing topics including language, literacy, Common Core State Standards, and SLPA supervision at state and regional events and through online courses with Northern Speech Services https://www.northernspeech.com/online-ceus/.
I hope you find some helpful tools and activities on these pages. I look forward to hearing from you.
Warm Regards,
Jennifer
