Develop goals based on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and implement activities based on children's literature to address phonemic awareness, listening and speech/language skills in grades K - 5. Sample IEP objectives, based on educational standards, are linked to picture books that are used to address communication during shared reading and through extension activities after reading. Texts from a variety of genres and reading levels are presented. Resources for identifying vocabulary and language structures appropriate for specific communication goals and grade levels are be identified.

The Skill-Based Assessment of Core Communication Skills: K-2 and 3-5 are non-standardized measures of proficiency of communication skills required for students to successfully master grade-level content in the regular education curriculum.
Based on the Common Core State Standards for English Langauge Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects for grades K-5 (National Governors Association, 2010), the SACCS are designed for use by speech-language pathologists to identify student strengths and needs and document progress on targeted skill areas.
The assessment tasks included in the SACCS are:
