What is Educational Technology?

Educational technology is any piece of equipment that can be used as a tool for instruction. Today, we associate the word "technology" solely with computers and digital machines, however, educational technology could be anything as simple as paper and pencils or as complex as computers, printers, etc... These technologies help students by improving educational outcomes. However, these technologies do not always have to be tangible-they can be practices as well.

ISTE:

ISTE is the International Society of Technology Education. It sets the national standards for teachers and students in technology. Their standards are targeted for students who learn in our technology saturated society. They utilize technology to improve student learning with the goal of helping students to thrive and become lifelong learners. Our ever-changing technology is seen as an educational vehicle to aid in student achievement and success. ISTE hopes for education to be full of exploration for learners. They do this by promoting student-driven education in the classroom.

Empowered Learner

Students utilize technology to improve their learning outcomes. They are able to set learning goals and customize their learning environment to best fit their learning style.

Digital Citizen

Students understand that they have a digital presence and recognize that they are a citizen of technology. This means they have rights, but also need to be aware of ethicality.

Knowledge Constructor

Students utilize their digital tools to research and acquire a wealth of knowledge.

Innovative Designer

Students use their innovation to solve problems by using the technology that is provided to them. They feel comfortable with open ended questions and test their answers multiple times to ensure the best result.

Computational Thinker

Students use their ability to collect data and analyze it by breaking the problem down into chunks.

Creative Communicator

Students use a multitude of formats and tools to communicate effectively. They use digital tools to create messages for specific audiences.

Global Collaborator

Students effectively collaborate to widen their perspectives by exploring economic issues and utilizing technology to solve problems.

Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity

Teachers can effectively model innovation to students and promote thinking and problem solving skills. In addition, encourage students to reflect in order to clarify their understanding.

Design and Develop Digital Age Learning Experiences and Assessments

Teachers are able to create or adapt digital tools to promote effective student learning by customizing activities to best suit diverse needs.

Model Digital Age Work and Learning

Teachers are able to use various kinds of technology and teach these skills to learners.

Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility

Teachers should model and teach students safe and ethical use of various types of technology by teaching rules and "netiquette".

Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership

Teachers should constantly grow and adapt knowledge and leadership in technology and learning. Contribute to new ideas and be able to reflect in order to improve leadership and practice.
