An explanation of what a 'DESKTOP' is:
The average Computer User, the 'interface' that we 'point and click' on is called the 'DESKTOP'. Apple Macs, MS Windows both come with a user interface commonly called the Desktop. Both are designed and maintained by the manufacturer. Unfortunately they control the look, feel and functionality of the User EXperience 'UX'. On the 'hardware side' PCs are called Desktop Machines and Laptops (or Notebooks). In the Linux World the GUI (Graphic User Interface) or desktop is called a 'Workspace', two ways of referring to the same thing.
What's the real difference? Using a Linux Based Computer gives the user the choice of the kind of 'Desktop' the user likes, as opposed to what Apple or Microsoft pick for you. The best part is YOU can choose what the Desktop looks like and functionality is.
The computer can be 'tweaked' to your liking/work-style.
