This was the first piece I wrote while studying at Iowa State University in the fall of 2021. It received its premiere on a recital the following spring and you can find it on Audio here. It is a grade 4.5 piece and is approximately 9 minutes long, but with it being broken up into several movements, you can easily separate it out into smaller chunks to be performed in part or whole, or even used as etudes.
This piece is available through JW Pepper! Purchase today in print or digitally for the price of $16!
Here are program notes about the piece:
This piece is a study in how to write and perform a set of variations in an almost etude-esque format. It is an unaccompanied solo for horn with a brief break between each variation. This was purposeful, so that the performer can make any adjustments or keep going. It explores most of the range available to the horn on a call that is idiomatic of the famous horn calls. It was originally performed by Logan Tekolste and it was that experience that prompted her to commission "To Higher Peaks."
