Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy arises from the re-thinking learning processes by incorporating digital technologies in smart ways to foster learning outcomes. Fundamental for this philosphy is the "Flipped Classroom" concept that changes how students prepare for a lecture.

By providing self-regulated learning possibilites through digital learning material, students are able to prepare before the actual lecture. In addition, the flipped classroom concept developed within our team (recognized by the Association for Information Systems with the Innovation in Teaching Award), emphasizes to also teach higher-order learning goals during online learning phases that are scaffolded through learning process interventions (see my AMLE paper on the benefits of scaffolding problem solving: https://journals.aom.org/doi/10.5465/amle.2018.0078                                                               ). In consequence, students are better prepared for valuable touchpoints during presence lectures. For conducting lectures, I am also certified by the University of Kassel and its advanced training program for lecturers (LLukas).

My teaching portfolio includes large-scale Bachelor level courses as well as Master level seminars. Furthermore, I advised numerous bachelor and master theses that were developed to research papers published at conferences and journals, and won several awards.

I am also working on the transformation of teaching in different learning contexts, especially Management Education, e.g., I am a co-organizer of the Academy of Management Professional Development Workshop (PDW) on Gamification in 2022-2023 in the MED division.

In addition, a key pillar of my teaching philosophy is the integration of researching technology-mediated learning and directly incorporating these insights into daily teaching practice. The following key papers provide an overview about my research activities especially concerned with higher education and teaching:

In our AIS THCI paper we focus on how to leverage the potentials of learning management systems and the crucial role of how faithful learners appropriate information systems in their learning process.
