For this week's activity we are going to explore Surrealism and 'dreamlike' art.
Click on the "LET'S EXPLORE SURREALISM!" link from Tate Kids to view a brief video on Surrealism.
Begin developing ideas of what you think is Surrealist or dreamlike imagery.
Are there any movies, cartoons, or books you've seen that feature Surrealist imagery?
What Surrealistic imagery might you see in the pictures?
Disney's Fantasia
Pixar's Inside Out
Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants
Nintendo's Super Mario Odyssey
INSTRUCTIONS: Look at the examples below to see how to create your activity. You will be taking 3 random things and then combining them to create a Surrealist drawing. The weirder the things the better. Your drawings do NOT have to make sense.

VIRTUAL TOUR of GYEONGGI MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
4/27/2020-5/1/2020
For this week's activity we will be taking a video tour of the Gyeonggi Museum's Graffiti Exhibit!
Click on the Youtube video to follow the Virtual Penguin through the museum's graffiti exhibit!
PART1: How does Graffiti make you feel? Do you like it? Where have you seen Graffiti style used in everyday things. Are there any elements of Art in Graffiti that you have used in Art Class/Art Projects? Should it be considered art, vandalism, or both? Write on a sheet of paper, your drawing, or just think to yourself how you feel about Graffiti.
PART 2: Let's try to draw our name in Graffiti. Think of a style you want to try and practice it. You can use your nickname if you would like!
To give your shapes depth, use a horizon line to make your letters boxy or give them dimension. How can you make your letters "POP" ???
Here are 3 different styles that I played around with. I used blocky shapes, wavy lines, and bubble shapes to create my letters. I also used some of the shading techniques from the "Shading Lesson."
1. Start by writing your name in normal "clean" handwriting.
2. Trace the shape you would like to make your letters in. Try boxes, bubbles, or wavy lines around your letters.
3. Erase your original letters to leave the shape of the outline only.
4. Start adding "dimension" to your work by doing some type of background for your letters. Use 3D lines, shapes, and outlines.
5. Try adding some bold colors to brighten up your artwork!
6. Keep adding details to your work to make it "POP"
VIRTUAL ART MUSEUM FIELD TRIP ACTIVITY
4/20/2020-4/24/2020
For this week's activity we will be exploring the Museum of Fine Arts Houston using a virtual tour. After your museum adventure you will be flexing your drawing muscles again!
Click on "The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Houston, United States - Google Arts & Culture" link.
-Scroll down until you see 4 museum views.
-Click on whichever tour you think looks the most interesting to you.
-Use your mouse (if you are on a computer) or your fingers (if you are on a smart phone) to explore the museum until you find a work of art that you like.
-You can click on the artworks at the bottom of the page to move around easier from room to room.
*HINT-use your memory* You have probably seen a lot of these works of Art in the past when you took your 3rd Grade Field Trip to the MFAH.
-Once you find a work of art that stands out to you try to do a quick recreation of the work and draw it with your own style.
-You do not have to make it exactly the same if you don't want to. Try new colors, tones, shapes, etc. to make it your own.
EXAMPLE DRAWING by Mr. Lam.
"The Scream" by Edvard Munch
4/13/2020-4/17/2020
For this week's activity we will take a look at a classic work of art: 'The Scream' by Edvard Munch. Due to the Covid-19 crisis I think it is natural for all of us to want to let out a huge scream about a number of things. We can share what frustrations we may have in our artwork this week. Do you miss your friends? Do you miss going to school, stores, or restaurants? Are you tired of having to quarantine at home? Are you sad that people are getting sick? Let out a scream in your artwork this week.
Explore the link "Zoom Into 'The Scream' - Google Arts & Culture" to read some facts about the masterpiece.
2. For even more information click on the Youtube video "How To Draw The Scream By Edvard Munch" to listen to more facts about the artwork.
Let's create our own version of "The Scream" by following the instructions below.
Start by planning out how you want your facial features to look.
2. Use a pencil to start sketching out yourself in "The Scream" style. Use "wavy" lines and draw softly in case you have to erase.
3. Start adding details to your drawing to make it look more like you.
4. If you have colors add some colors to finish up your work.
SHADING PRACTICE & STILL LIFE ACTIVITY
(4/6/2020-4/10/2020)
Hi 4th and 5th Grade students! For this week's activity we are going to practice shading which is coloring to add depth and dimension to your drawings. We will also be shading a still life which is any object(s) around that you would like to draw (example: a can of soda, an apple, a toy, a video game controller, etc.).
You will be practicing 6 different types of shading: Hatching, Cross-Hatching, Stippling, Shading, Scribbling, and Smudging.
Shading Style Definitions:
Hatching - shading by using parallel lines to add dark and light value
Cross Hatching - shading by using lines (like regular hatching) but this time the lines will cross over each other
Stippling - shading by using dots to add value (a lot of dots will make something darker and less dots will make it lighter).
Shading - this is coloring your image as smoothly as possible to show light and dark parts of your image. Most of you already do this!
Scribbling - shading by scribbling your lines to add dark and light value
Smudging - shading by coloring normally then using your finger, a tissue, or any tool to smudge and smooth over your shading. A lot of you already do this!
On a sheet of paper start by drawing 6 boxes and labeling them with the different types of shading.
2. With a pencil or crayon begin practicing the different ways to shade in the labeled boxes. Start by drawing softly/lightly then going back and darkening after.
3. Find something around you that you would like to draw as your still life. Keep it simple. It can be a ball, a piece of fruit, a can of soda, or anything that represents a 3 dimensional prism. Practice your shading techniques on the still life you choose.
You do NOT have to do this activity all in 1 day. You can do the box shading activity 1 day and the still life another day.
BONUS: Look at the 4 eyeball drawings below. Can you tell what shading style each artist used? I will reveal the answers on Thursday 4/9/2020!
Stippling
2. Scribbling
3. Cross Hatching
4. Smudging
VINCENT VAN GOGH ACTIVITY
3/30/2020-4/3/2020
For this project we will be exploring the artist Vincent Van Gogh and try to recreate his masterpiece "Starry Night"
INSTRUCTIONS:
Watch this video.
2. Watch this video too!
3. Read the article on Vincent Van Gogh.
4. On a separate sheet of paper try to draw "Starry Night" in the style of Vincent Van Gogh but put your own spin on it. How can you recreate the image with your own ideas? How can you make it look more like a modern city, or your own city, or another planet, or a different season? Get creative. Get Weird!
5. *BONUS* You may recreate "Bedroom in Arles" or "Sunflowers" instead of "Starry Night." OR.... be bold and recreate all three!
