R2-MKE is a group of droid builders mostly in the Milwaukee area. This project was brought up when some builders were talking about how we don't have a backdrop for our droids. We chose to create this set for the Milwaukee Maker Faire. After some discussion came up with this criteria:
Steve S. already had a lot of 1"x3" lumber lying so we based the bulk of the design on using the 1"x3" lumber for the panels. panels have a hardboard base that 1" pink insulation foam to add the details and of coarse no Star Wars build is complete with out weathering. oh you cant forget the greeblies. Greeblies are the random bits and bobs that make props like they really work.
Templates are used to trace the patterns onto the door.
A dremel is used with a router bit to cut through the 1" pink Foam
Each panel is 3'x8' bolts and brakes down into panels that are 3'x4' bolts. Each panel is bolted together with 3/8".
Because of the size of the project normal house paint and primer was used. the colors were chosen to Resemble those found on tatooine.
A sign was made by Steve R. overnight out of Gator board and resin casts to be used as greeblies. The words on the sign say R2MKE in the Star Wars text known as aurebesh. This is a test to see how the blast doors look before weathering
Weathering is the act of making a item look used and aged. The technique used was to add some paint and then "clean" the item a little bit to make the appearance of someone has tried to clean it. in this process you highlight some small details and you hide your mistakes.
