Taking Up Space was our collaborative celebration of resilience and self-expression, brought to life by 3 passionate queer teenagers in our quaint town of Steamboat Springs. Through the mediums of sustainable fashion, mixed media art, paint, and words, we hoped to amplify our voices and share our unique stories with the community.
In a society that often seeks to confine us to boxes, we had chosen to boldly claim our space, both in the art world and in our own identities. Often, we are reminded of how politicized and villainized we are, and that inspires our work just as it affects everyday life. Each piece in this show served as a testament to experiences, triumphs, challenges, and horrors in the queer community.
Taking Up Space was not merely an exhibition; it was a statement of existence, a declaration of the right to be seen and heard and fought for. We challenged stereotypes and misconceptions about the LGBTQ+ community, and we wanted to demonstrate that art can be a powerful catalyst for change. Even in places like Steamboat. Through our creations, we were trying to break barriers and change prejudices. We insisted on the validity of our stories. We refused to be quiet.
As queer teens from a small town, we may have felt like outliers, but with Taking Up Space, we instead are creators, storytellers, and champions of authenticity. We were here, taking up space, unapologetically and with pride.

Prescriptions like antidepressants, birth control, puberty blockers, and HRT often have a large stigma around them. But in my experience, medicine helps. My prescriptions are like little soldiers in my body, they fight for my happiness and they are winning. Medication shouldn’t have such a negative stigma; it’s here to help and it really does change lives.

Relief is one of the biggest emotions I felt after coming out to my family as transgender. I knew it would be a long, probably painful journey, but I had finally taken the first step. I could finally find peace in my identity and live authentically.

Dolls are so often gendered. I wanted to turn them into an outfit that isn’t meant just for girls; it’s meant to be gender as artistic expression, like drag. I wanted to take something that boys sometimes aren’t allowed to play with and make a gender-neutral piece using the colors of babyhood and elements from our childhoods.

This series of mini-paintings were a way for me to express my struggles with executive dysfunction, which stems from my mental illness and neurodivergence. I wanted to show what my body sometimes feels like when I’m so stuck that I can’t shower, brush my teeth, clean my room, or take my medication.

The short story A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings inspired this painting. It is dehumanization visualized. Both the angel in the story and transgender/nonbinary people in real life are dehumanized to the point of death sometimes, and it just leaves me with the question: why?

A chest binder is a gender-affirming clothing undergarment that compresses breast tissue, making the chest appear flatter. This was my first ever binder, and I wore it until it had holes. It’s one of the first things that made me feel comfortable in my own skin, and I’m forever thankful. I couldn’t bring myself to just get rid of it now that it’s no longer wearable, so I decided to frame it to show its importance to me.

Alone is a poem I wrote about my experience in Denver International Airport in 2023. It illustrates the feeling of being an outsider in a gendered world, a feeling that nonbinary people must face almost every single day.

“Creature” represents the difficulties of my transition. It’s the ball of anger and frustration and depression that hides inside of you, showing its ugly self when you least expect it.
