Cathy Collins

Cathy Collins has worked as a Library Media Specialist for 23 years! She is currently a library media specialist at Sharon High School, where she has worked for the past eight years. She holds a Doctorate in Education with a specialization in Curriculum, Leadership, Teaching and Learning; and additional Masters Degrees in Education and Library Science.

Dr. Collins has served on the MassCUE Board as PD Chair since 2015, published her writing in various journals including “EdWeek,” “Library Media Connection,” “NEA Today,” and “Knowledge Quest.” She is a 2012 Reynolds High School Journalism Institute Fellow and served as a project consultant for the E-Book, “Searchlights and Sunglasses: Journalism in the Digital Age.” She received a “Teachers for Global Classrooms” fellowship from the U.S. State Dept. in 2014 and is the recipient of AASL’s Intellectual Freedom Award (2014). She was named an MSLA “Super Librarian” in 2015. She served on the MA State Science Ambassador Team and enjoys contributing to the ISTE STEM PLN Leadership Team efforts. She is passionate about STEM/STEAM and global education. In addition to coordinating the Chinese Exchange Program at SHS, she has journeyed with her students to India, Peru and most recently Tanzania, Africa to contribute to global service learning projects.

Projects

Cathy is a co-organizer of the series, "Sharon STEM Talks." Along with Cathy, the team includes Emily Burke, James Dixon, and Vladimir Botchkarev. As part of a High School outreach program, students are invited to attend college-level seminars at the school. There is a new speaker each month. The mission of Sharon STEM talks is to stimulate scientific discussions within the community and to educate students about current topics in STEM. The talks include topics in cell biology, genetics, medicine, astrophysics, marine biology, climate change, scientific publishing, data science, and science careers. The program is funded by ASCB COMPASS Outreach Grant Program and the Sharon Education Foundation.

Dr. Collins served on the MassCUE Board as PD Chair from 2015-Oct. 2019 and served as a a co-leader of the MassCUE Makerspace Special Interest group for several years through 2019. Her doctoral dissertation was a case study that focused on the implementation of makerspace programs in schools.
