SEA SHANTIES

A group of ISMA Shanty singers meet on occasion to sing shanties for pub fun, and once per year this modest little group performs in February at the Annual Mariner's Service and Blessing of the Great Lakes Fleet.

Northwest Passage

Chorus: Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage

To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea;

Tracing one warm line through a land so wide and savage

And make a Northwest Passage to the sea.

Westward from the Davis Strait 'tis there 'twas said to lie

The sea route to the Orient for which so many died;

Seeking gold and glory, leaving weathered, broken bones

And a long-forgotten lonely cairn of stones.

Chorus: Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage

To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea;

Tracing one warm line through a land so wide and savage

And make a Northwest Passage to the sea.

Three centuries thereafter, I take passage overland

In the footsteps of brave Kelso, where his "sea of flowers" began

Watching cities rise before me, then behind me sink again

This tardiest explorer, driving hard across the plain.

Chorus: Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage

To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea;

Tracing one warm line through a land so wide and savage

And make a Northwest Passage to the sea.

How then am I so different from the first men through this way?

Like them, I left a settled life, I threw it all away.

To seek a Northwest Passage at the call of many men

To find there but the road back home again.

Chorus: Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage

To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea;

Tracing one warm line through a land so wide and savage

And make a Northwest Passage to the sea.

The anchor's on board an' the cable's all stored

To be rollickin' randy dandy O!

Oh, man the stout caps'n and heave with a will

Weigh, hey, roll an' go!

Soon we'll be drivin' her 'way up the hill

To be rollickin' randy dandy O!

Heave a pawl, oh, heave away

Weigh, hey, roll and go!

The anchor's on board an' the cable's all stored

To be rollickin' randy dandy O!

Sing goodbye to Sally an goodbye to Sue,

Weigh, hey, roll and go!

For we are the boy-os who can kick ‘er through

To be rollickin' randy dandy O!

Heave a pawl, oh, heave away

Weigh, hey, roll and go!

The anchor's on board an' the cable's all stored

To be rollickin' randy dandy O!

Weigh, hey, roll and go!

Let’s get the glad-rags on an’ drive’ er to sea

To be rollickin’ randy dandy O!

Heave a pawl, oh, heave away

Weigh, hey, roll and go!

HAUL AWAY JOE

Naow whin oi wuz little lad an’ so me mother told me

Way haul away, we’ll haul away Joe!

That if oi did’t kiss the the girls my lips would go all moldy

Way haul away, we’ll haul away Joe!

Way haul away we’ll haul away together

Way haul away, we’ll haul away Joe!

Oh King Louis wuz the King o’ France afore the revolution

Way haul away, we’ll haul away Joe!

But he got his head cut off, and spoiled his constitution

Way haul away, we’ll haul away Joe!

Way haul away we’ll haul for better weather!

Way haul away, we’ll haul away Joe!

We loaded for the homeward run, and hands so free an’ ‘aisy

Way haul away, we’ll haul away Joe!

And in his galley sat the doc,a makin’ plum duff-graisy

Way haul away, we’ll haul away Joe!

Way haul away we’ll haul away together

Way haul away, we’ll haul away Joe!

Way haul away we’ll haul for better weather!

Hey don’t yer see that black cloud a’risen

Way haul away, we’ll haul away Joe!

Hey don’t yer see storm cloud a’gatherin

Way haul away we’ll haul away together

Way haul away, we’ll haul away Joe!

Way haul away we’ll haul for better weather

Way haul away, we’ll haul away Joe!

Before the Day is Done

One night as I went walking

To the harbour I was bound

I happened on a band of men wandering through the town

CHORUS:

And it’s haul on the bowline

Keep her six points off the wind

We’ve got to make one hundred leagues before the day is done

We’ve got to make one hundred leagues before the day is done

They seemed to me a cheerful lot

To the harbour I was bound

They offered me a drink of port I was next to stand the round

CHORUS:

And it’s haul on the bowline

Keep her six points off the wind

We’ve got to make one hundred leagues before the day is done

We’ve got to make one hundred leagues before the day is done

Soon my head was spinning

To the harbour I was bound

I woke up on the fo’c’sle floor near twenty miles from town

CHORUS:

And it’s haul on the bowline

Keep her six points off the wind

We’ve got to make one hundred leagues before the day is done

We’ve got to make one hundred leagues before the day is done

The cook he is a scurvy knave

To the harbour I was bound

Every dish he sends this way tastes like coffee grounds

CHORUS:

And it’s haul on the bowline

Keep her six points off the wind

We’ve got to make one hundred leagues before the day is done

We’ve got to make one hundred leagues before the day is done

Two months have passed since I roved out

To the harbour I was bound

Though we’ve got twelve more before we’re through I’ve yet to see a crown

CHORUS:

And it’s haul on the bowline

Keep her six points off the wind

We’ve got to make one hundred leagues before the day is done

We’ve got to make one hundred leagues before the day is done

And when my time is over

To the harbour I was bound

No more I’ll go out walking the dark streets of the town

CHORUS:

And it’s haul on the bowline

Keep her six points off the wind

We’ve got to make one hundred leagues before the day is done

We’ve got to make one hundred leagues before the day is done

Ah, ha! Me London Julie

Well around Cape Horn through the Ice and Snow.

Ah, ha! Me London Julie

CHORUS: Oh, Julianna, Julianna, Where do you go?

Ah, ha! Me London Julie.

Oh, Julianna, Julianna, Where do you go?

Ah, ha! Me London Julie.

Leave her, Johnny

Oh the times was hard and the wages low

Leave her, Johnny, leave her

And the grub was bad and the gales did blow

And it's time for us to leave her

Chorus:

Leave her, Johnny, leave her

Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her

For the voyage is done and the winds do blow

And it's time for us to leave her

I thought I heard the Old Man say

Leave her, Johnny, leave her

You can go ashore and take your pay

And it's time for us to leave her

Chorus:

Leave her, Johnny, leave her

Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her

For the voyage is done and the winds do blow

And it's time for us to leave her

And we'll leave her tight and we'll leave her trim

Leave her, Johnny, leave her

For there's many a worser we've sailed in

And it's time for us to leave her

Chorus:

Leave her, Johnny, leave her

Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her

For the voyage is done and the winds do blow

And it's time for us to leave her

And now it's time to say goodbye

Leave her, Johnny, leave her

For the old pierhead's a-drawing nigh

And it's time for us to leave her

Chorus:

Leave her, Johnny, leave her

Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her

For the voyage is done and the winds do blow

And it's time for us to leave her
