Ronald "Ron" Fordyce
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ronald "Ron" Fordyce, on January 17, 2025.
Ron is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Sharron "Sherrie" Fordyce (née Eagles), his devoted sons Kregg Fordyce (Shannon Krasny) and Kameron Fordyce (Julie), and his cherished grandchildren Roen, Trey, Max, Pierce, and Ben. Ron is also survived by his siblings Jane Abbott (née Fordyce), Pat Fordyce, Gordon Fordyce, his brother-in-law Gordon Eagles and his sister-in-law Brenda Lee Crawford (née Eagles).
An avid outdoorsman, Ron felt most at home in the woods. As a boy Ron was awarded the honour of the Queen’s Scout Award in Ottawa and represented Camp Wheeler Scout Camp for archery. In addition, Ron spent his summers at the family cottage on Lake Kashagawigamog in the Haliburton Highlands fishing, boating and working at the lodges in various roles including teaching waterskiing.
For the past 40 years, he was a proud member of the Spring Lake Hunt Camp, where he formed lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories. A passionate track, football and hockey athlete as a young man and dedicated fan, Ron proudly supported his hometown Hamilton Tiger-Cats throughout his life.

From working as a meteorologist on TV and at the International Airport in Sudbury to serving as a Port Meteorological Officer and ultimately as the Superintendent of the Marine Data Unit for the Ontario Region, Ron gained extensive expertise in managing marine weather data. He and his team developed a buoy program that has become the foundation of research and safety, supporting weather forecasting in the Great Lakes as well as in other regions around the world. Ron’s dedication to his work has earned him the respect of colleagues and peers alike, both in Canada and internationally.
As a long-standing member and Secretary-Treasurer of the International Shipmasters' Association, N iagara Lodge 20, Ron's passion for all things marine was unparalleled, reflecting his deep connection to Canada’s waterways and maritime heritage.
Ron found joy and solace in his and Sherrie's beloved cottage at Six Mile Lake, a home they built together and a place that became the heart of where they hosted friends, family and especially the grandsons and their friends.
Above all, Ron will be remembered as a loving husband, a proud father, grandfather and a loyal friend. His affable nature, kindness, humour, and steadfast love for his family will remain in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be dearly missed but forever remembered.

Capt. James Vanoverbeek, MM
April 13, 1946 - May 03, 2022 [age 76]
Master Mariner, Ham Radio Operator, Call Sign VA3 JVO
ISMA Pennant No.11537
It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of the passing of Captain Jim Van Overbeek.
Jim graduated with the 2nd cohort of Georgian’s Marine Navigation Program in 1977 after earning a Bachelor’s degree from Simon Fraser University. Captain Vanoverbeek spent 23 years at sea working on tankers on the Great Lakes and in the Canadian Arctic, starting his career with Gulf oil in 1978, and then to Soconav when they took over control of the company in 1985. In 1995 he moved into the Soconav office to manage the annual tanker sealift and resupply mission in Canada's Arctic. In 1997 he retired from sea service and began his teaching career at Georgian College. For the next 19 years, he taught in the Marine Navigation program from 1998 to 2017. Jim taught almost every course in the program including navigation simulator based courses.
Jim took pride in getting to know all of his students and what made them tick outside of the classroom. He knew what their hobbies, interests, where they lived and were from, and what their future ambitions were. He knew more about his students than most if not all instructors. Jim enjoyed instructing marine students. He enjoyed and took pride in being a professor tasked with educating and training the marine professionals of the future. He worked to convey this pride and professionalism to his students with his own style and charm mixed in.
The flags at the Owen Sound campus will be lowered to half-mast for three days in Captain Vanoverbeek's honour.
There will be no funeral service for Jim and a cremation has already taken place. In memory of Jim, his family says that you may make a donation to the Bruce Trail Association, The Canadian Cancer Society and Georgian College in his name. A members memorial will be placed up for him on the Lodge 15 Web site.

Passed away peacefully on December 22nd, 2021. Born on November 25, 1930, he was in his 92nd year.
Capt. McNeill sailed on the Great Lakes for 45 years and obtained his Masters Certificate in 1960. He was a captain with Hindman Transportation, sailing the Martha Hindman among other ships, and in his last 25 years sailing, a GLPA Great Lakes Pilot. During that time, he sat on the examination board for a decade, examining new applicants who wished to become pilots. He was a Marine Navigation Instructor, Owen Sound Harbour Master, incredible hockey player, outstanding baseball player, Member of the Royal Canadian Legion, was an elder in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, and was very, very well known and liked in the Georgian Bay Community. Being a native of the area, he practically grew up around the Owen Sound Harbour. His father was a Captain with the Owen Sound Transportation Co. for 30 years, having obtained his Master's Licence in Owen Sound in the 1930's.
His son said that everything above considered, that he fought the good fight, but in the end couldn't beat the pneumonia. His most treasured qualities were his personality - his loyalty, always positive attitude, his kindness, and thoughtfulness. His eternal contentment and the ability to remain calm in a stressful situation. The brightest light in a room full of darkness.
He was a respected member of the Marine Community and a charter member of the International Shipmasters' Lodge in Owen Sound back in the 1980's. He has the distinction of being the longest serving marine teacher in Georgian Bay [over 60 years], having started teaching "Winter Marine" in the old Owen Sound Coliseum back in the 1960's before the Owen Sound's Georgian College was even built. He finished his teaching career sharing his marine knowledge by working and teaching on the Marine Ship Simulators. He was instrumental in ensuring that all of the information data was transferred between simulators in 2008 when the new one came on line for the Transport Canada Exams. We recognize and remember that he was a very honourable, well liked, respected man and a role model to so many of us.
Beloved husband for 63 years of Lois McNeill (née Cox). Loving father of Mike McNeill (Lisa) of Waterloo and Bob McNeill of Garland, Texas. Cherished grandpa of David, John and Nate McNeill of Texas and Breanna and Ashlynn McNeill of Waterloo. Also survived by his brother Alex McNeill and his wife Madelyn of Owens Sound.

The Lord is my Pilot; I shall not drift.
He guides me across the dark waters,
He Steers me in deep channels.
He keeps my log.
He pilots me by the star of holiness for His name’s sake.
Yea, though I sail 'mid the fenders and tempest of life,
I shall dread no danger, for He is near me.
His love and care shelter me.
He prepares a harbor before me in the homeland of eternity.
He anoints the waves with oil, my ship rides calmly.
Surely sunlight and starlight shall favor me on my voyages,
and I will rest in the Port of our Lord forever.
John H. Roberts, 1874
