CT Audubon - We just released the report from our 2023 Osprey Nation season. I want to make sure you see it, and I also want to share a few key takeaways, below. Ospreys are thriving, and interest in these beautiful, fish-eating raptors is thriving as well. The volunteer Osprey nest stewards documented 688 active nests and 881 fledgling Ospreys — the most ever recorded by the project. Observers found 111 nests that had not been mapped previously. This probably indicates the population is growing and the range is expanding. The Osprey Nation 2023 report and summary can be found by clicking HERE!

Electoral victories by right-wing populist parties in Italy, Finland, Sweden, and elsewhere have pushed environmental issues to the fringe. Now, green policies are being watered down or reversed, and advocates fear the EU will fail to reach its climate targets. Read Schwägerl’s report.

On October 2, 2023, FEMA published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking in the Federal Register for revisions to its floodplain management regulations at Title 44 Part 9 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR): Floodplain Management and Protection of Wetlands. This is a 60-day public comment period, open from October 2, 2023 to December 1, 2023. The revisions propose to fully implement the Federal Flood Risk Management Standard (FFRMS). The FFRMS increases the resilience of federally funded projects by incorporating anticipated changes in future flood risk into certain projects to ensure that those projects last as long as intended.
The National Environmental Policy Act and Executive Order (EO) 11988 on Floodplain Management mandate that federal agencies evaluate their actions to avoid adverse impacts to floodplains and to avoid supporting development in areas at risk of flooding.

Mystic Aquarium's Animal Rescue Program is aware of and has responded to a manatee reported in Rhode Island earlier this week. While it is unusual to see manatees in New England, occasionally manatees will swim up this way from the Florida area and will make their way back down south as temperatures start to drop in the fall. Since 1995, there have been 6 confirmed documented cases of manatees in our coverage area of CT, RI, and Fisher's Island, NY. Manatees are endangered and are a federally protected species making it illegal to touch or feed them. Mystic Aquarium's Animal Rescue Program is working closely with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management to monitor this manatee's health and condition. If you happen to see the manatee, please keep a distance and report any sightings to our hotline at (860) 572-5955 x 107.

Ocean Conservation Research – OCR - Say aaah! The striped mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta) is a fascinating fish that feeds by filtering tiny organisms from the water. This small, sleek fish can be found in tropical and subtropical waters and is an important part of many marine ecosystems. One of the most interesting things about the striped mackerel is the way it feeds. Rather than actively pursuing prey, this fish swims with its mouth open, using its gill rakers like a net to filter out tiny zooplankton from the water. Zooplankton are small, animal-like organisms that drift in the ocean, and the striped mackerel is able to feed on them by swimming with its mouth open and filtering them out of the water. https://www.facebook.com/OceanConservationResearch/
NYS Department of Environmental Conservation - Do songbirds get mad at hummingbirds for not knowing the words? One example of a songbird is the Red-winged Blackbird. Listen below for the distinctive "check" call followed by the song "conk-la-ree", which is a classic sound of wetlands across North America. Songbird refers to a specific suborder of birds. All songbirds are perching birds, an order called passerines that share a distinct toe arrangement that helps them grasp branches. Songbirds vary in size and songs, but they do have something in common: precise control of a highly specialized vocal organ called a syrinx. Almost all birds use a syrinx to produce sound, but songbirds have superior mastery of theirs. https://www.facebook.com/NYSDEC

Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) - DEEP has launched its Residential Energy Preparation Services (REPS) program to address barriers to weatherization. This program will allow access to additional #energyefficiency upgrades, decreasing energy costs & increasing #sustainablility for homes. “The launch of this program means we can help Connecticut’s most vulnerable residents improve the health, safety, and affordability of their homes,” said DEEP Commissioner Katie Dykes. “Some of our older homes have health or safety-related barriers, like mold or asbestos, that prevent contractors from making improvements, meaning we can’t deliver money-saving upgrades equitably. This program will lead to weatherization and energy efficiency home improvements and other energy retrofits that can save money and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.”

But though it is a climate law, it’s narrowly focused on only one segment of the United States’s greenhouse gas emissions. https://www.thedriftmag.com/climate-alibis/
