Welcome to the UCL QS IoN & DRI project website

ISG has been appointed as the main contractor for University College London’s (UCL) development to create a world leading centre for neurological research. The centre will bring together clinicians and research teams from different disciplines to tackle the neurodegenerative conditions that give rise to dementia, now the leading cause of death in England and Wales.

The new biomedical facility at 256 Gray’s Inn Road will host the central hub of UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) and the University’s leading Queen Square Institute of Neurology (IoN), which will include an NHS Neurology out-patient facility for University College London Hospitals.

UCL’s aim is to provide the most comprehensive, coordinated neuroscience research centre in the world; from research at laboratory benches to patient care.

Neurological diseases, such as dementia, stroke and epilepsy affect four million people in the UK and account for around 13% of global disease prevalence. For more information, please visit the UCL website.

About UCL

Founded in 1826, UCL is a world-leading education and research institution. They have 38,000 students from 150 different countries and 13,000 teaching staff. The Queen Square Institute of Neurology (IoN) is number one in Europe and currently second in the world for neurological research.

Recently, they have experienced an unprecedented growth in student numbers and need more academic space and require the space to be efficient and futureproof so it stands the test of time. Following the relocation of the existing dental hospital to its new home in Huntley Street, the Eastman Dental Hospital site could deliver around 13,000sqm of extra academic floorspace for UCL, as well as creating the new Queen Square Institute of Neurology and UK Dementia Research Institute facility.

The project

The existing site was occupied by the Eastman Dental Hospital and made up of a network of buildings including the former Royal Free Hospital, the Eastman Dental Clinic and the Levy Wing. The redevelopment of the site will see historic features retained and reused, and the rest demolished to make way for the world-leading research facility and UCL’s newest academic space.
