From India to Great Britain: The Journeys of Four Indians in the Long Eighteenth Century and the Problematics of Transculturation
The proposed paper seeks to explore a complex cultural interface between India and the Great Britain through the experiences of displacement of four Indians in the long eighteenth century - Mirza Sheikh I’tesamuddin Dean Mahomed, Abu Taleb and Lutfullah whose travel from India to the West was a site of socio-cultural negotiation with the metropolitan centre. I’tesamuddin appointed by Shah Alam, travelled to England as an expert in Persian diplomatic practices in 1765 and stayed there for three years and wrote the experiences of his migration to the West in Persian in a work titled The Wonder of Vilayet. Dean Mahomed was one of the notable Indian immigrants to the West in the late eighteenth century who opened his first Indian restaurant in UK after serving fifteen years in Bengal army and his experiences of migration written as The Travels of Dean Mahomet is not merely the first Indian travelogue in English but considered as the earliest instance of Indian writing in English. Mirza Abu Taleb Khan travelled to the West from 1799 to 1803 at the invitation of Captain David Richardson, a Persian lexicographer. Unlike Mahomet, Taleb wrote his travelogue in Persian probably in 1805 for a domestic audience. It was translated into English by Charles Stewart, Professor of Oriental Languages at Haileybury College and was published in 1810 as The Travels of Mirza Abu Taleb Khan in Asia, Africa and Europe during the years 1799-1803 Written by Himself in the Persian Language. Lutfullah joined the service of the prince regent of Junagadh and embarked on a travel to London as part of an entourage to seek legitimacy for the Nawab from the East India Company in 1844. He also leant the English language through his professional association with the Company and he was recommended for teaching Persian to the colonial masters. Lutfullah’s travelogue Autobiography (1857) came out at a crucial phase in the history of Indian nationalism the Sepoy Mutiny took place in 1857. Lutfullah’s text was dedicated to Col W.H. Sykes F.R.C.S. London and is far more confident in its tone in comparison to both Mahomed and Taleb. Venturing into a new ‘Contact Zone’ the colonized subjects experienced dislocations not merely spatial and temporal but also cultural. The migration of the Indians as language teachers served the colonial interest and their knowledge was utlilised to exercise comprehensive control. Though they were enamoured by the British science and technology, they were extremely protective in their representation of religion and women. The encounter with the West provided the early Indian immigrants a scope to initiate a dialogue that formed a dialectical pattern of the selective acceptance and rejection of the Western culture through transculturation and ‘autoethnographic expressions’. They laid down the basic foundation of Indian diaspora and germinated a sense of nationalist self that ruptured the dynamics of empire. They occupy a liminal position by becoming the instruments of empire and also the voices of resistance that contributed to the rise of nationalism.

La denominada diáspora vasca en el periodo virreinal ha sido estudiada especialmente en aquellos lugares que fungían como importantes centros políticos y económicos dentro la Monarquía. De esta forma, la principal atención la han recibido, por un lado, Madrid, Sevilla y Cádiz en la Península Ibérica y por otro, México, Lima y Potosí, con respecto a las Indias. La presente ponencia tiene como objetivo articular a dicha experiencia diaspórica, a un grupo de migrantes vascos, la mayoría provenientes de Beci en el Concejo de Sopuerta (Vizcaya), en la Capitanía General de Chile en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII. Para ese entonces, el Reino de Chile era una región que se consideraba periférica y que debido a las Reformas Borbónicas ganaba importancia dentro del plano Imperial. De esta forma, esta propuesta busca principalmente integrarse a los tres ejes analíticos del Coloquio que tienen que ver con los vínculos que los individuos migrantes mantienen con su lugar de origen, con la cultura libraria diaspórica y con las aportaciones teóricas a la historia del libro, planteadas desde el “circuito de comunicaciones” de Darnton.
A través de la correspondencia de algunos miembros de la familia Trucios, en especial de Salvador de Trucios quien luego de cumplir una misión militar en las islas del Pacífico decidió probar suerte como comerciante en Santiago de Chile, su hermano Joaquín de Trucios desde la Paz (actual Bolivia), y Francisco de Trucios desde Beci, se quiere mostrar de manera precisa cómo a través de la experiencia migratoria se reprodujeron las estructuras sociales del lugar de origen para la conformación de redes familiares y comerciales que desde Santiago de Chile funcionaron en diferentes escalas, tanto locales como regionales e incluso imperiales. Así, lo que muestran especialmente las cartas enviadas desde Beci, es que fueron los individuos cercanos a la familia los que a medida que migraron se incorporaron al comercio y se unieron a través de vínculos matrimoniales con las hijas de Salvador Trucios. Las mismas cartas muestran además que el vínculo con Beci se mantuvo de diversas formas, entre ellas la religiosa y el interés por hacer donaciones monetarias a la Iglesia a la que pertenecía la familia.
Por otro lado, el caso planteado para la presente ponencia muestra, cómo los diferentes factores familiares, étnicos y de paisanaje se articularon en la conformación de redes de comercio que cubrieron una vasta región que comprendía corresponsales en Lima, Valparaíso, Santiago de Chile, Mendoza, Buenos Aires y Montevideo, además de los socios en Cádiz. De lo que se trata entonces es de una red que se incrustó en otras cuyo funcionamiento se alimentaba constantemente de la cadena de migración vasca que durante el siglo XVIII fue proveedora de funcionarios, militares y comerciantes hacia las Indias. Por lo tanto, alrededor de la figura de un comerciante exitoso en Santiago de Chile, como Salvador Trucios y su almacén, se consolidaron procesos no solo económicos y comerciales, sino también procesos culturales como la integración de los migrantes a la sociedad receptora.
Al mismo tiempo, las mismas redes comerciantes a las que perteneció Salvador Trucios, permitieron también otras formas de conservación del vínculo con el lugar de origen a través de aspectos de tipo intelectual en donde los libros y el factor informativo y de comunicación jugaron un papel determinante. En este sentido, son tres aspectos los que se quieren destacar. En primer lugar, en algunas cartas enviadas entre Cádiz y Santiago por socios comerciales que hacen parte del grupo vasco, se evidencia un cierto interés por el envío y compra de libros, que, aunque no se trate estrictamente de un comercio consolidado de este tipo de objetos, puede verse un creciente interés por su obtención y consumo. En segundo lugar, la correspondencia de Trucios muestra el interés que tuvieron los comerciantes por recibir noticias concernientes a la política y a las guerras imperiales, así como por el envío de Revistas y Gacetas. Estas noticias no solo configuraron el panorama comercial y determinaron, de alguna forma, el comportamiento de los mercados locales, sino que también le dieron sentido a la cotidianidad de quienes las leían y las comentaban. Fueron estos “circuitos de comunicaciones”, en los que los diferentes actores se apropiaron de lo leído y lo articularon dentro de su propia cotidianidad de forma manuscrita y oral, como los individuos le dieron un sentido y un significado a su realidad. Por último, y como un aspecto que engloba los ejes analíticos del Coloquio, en la década de los setenta del siglo XVIII, socios comerciales de Trucios en Cádiz, Lima y Buenos Aires, así como dos de los miembros del círculo su círculo familiar, José Joaquín de Ostolaza y Roque Jacinto de Huici ambos guipuzcoanos, se vincularon como socios Beneméritos de la Real Sociedad Bascongada de los Amigos del País. Esta membresía significaba una especie de renovación del vínculo con la patria que llevaban consigo los vascos migrantes, a través de una experiencia Ilustrada y reformadora, que consistía entre otras cosas en la recepción anual de un nuevo tipo de noticias del lugar de origen que comunicaban los impresos de la Bascongada.

The late long eighteenth century was a unique period in the political and social history of Vilnius. This city, which for centuries had been the main administrative center of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and one of the largest cultural hubs of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, became part of the Russian Empire following the partition of the state in 1795. However, from 1803 onward, intense processes of modernization began to take place in the city: the bureaucratic apparatus was developed, the level of education was raised, infrastructure for cultural life was expanded, publishing houses, journals, and scientific associations were established, etc. (Beauvois 2010). Vilnius, where Russian officials, German merchants, and students of Lithuanian and Belarusian origin flocked in large numbers, became a dynamic space of life for people of different nations. The former capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was transformed into, as L. Briedis described it, a ‘city of strangers’ (Briedis 2008).
As the long eighteenth century drew to a close, the multi-ethnic city of Vilnius saw a significant rise in the local Jewish diaspora, which constituted over one-third of the population, totaling approximately 20,000 individuals out of 50,000 inhabitants. According to the prevailing law, Jews were prohibited from settling outside a designated area, known as the Jewish quarter (Weeks 2015). Jews were also isolated symbolically: scholarly and journalistic texts often featured descriptions containing stigmatizing portrayals that reinforced the stereotype of Jews as swindlers and manipulators. The district where Jews lived used to be depicted as dirty, repulsive, and dangerous (Skwarczyński 1962). The press and scholarly discourse about the Jewish community in Vilnius revolved around the notions of ‘mismatch’ and ‘uncivilization.’ Although Vilnius had been an ethnically, religiously, and linguistically diverse place since the Renaissance period, at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Jews were treated as ‘uncivilized colonizers,’ hindering the social and cultural modernization progress. The Jewish diaspora was not seen as a community contributing to the multicultural image of the city. Streets inhabited by the diaspora were viewed by publicists and scholars as heterotopias, to borrow from M. Foucault’s concept (1984): spaces of exclusion both in physical and identity terms.
The anti-Semitic discourse, intensifying at the end of the long eighteenth century, especially in the press, ignored the fact that precisely at this historical moment, the Jewish diaspora in Vilnius was experiencing a period of intellectual flourishing. Prominent scholars known throughout Europe lived and worked there, including Eliyahu ben Shelomoh Zalman, known as the Gaon of Vilna, and Shemu’el Strashun. Yeshivas and smaller centers of cultural life thrived (Minczeles 2010). Historians agree that Vilnius was one of the most important centers of Haskalah, the Jewish Enlightenment, in all of Central and Eastern Europe (Katz 2004). Considering the social situation of Jews and their perception by other city residents in Vilnius leads to a peculiar paradox: the anti-Semitic discourse gains strength precisely at this time when Haskalah’s modernizing ideas create an opportunity for cultural contact between the Jewish diaspora and representatives of other nations.
In my presentation, I will outline Vilnius from 1795 to 1830 as one of the largest and most vibrant centers of the Jewish diaspora in Central and Eastern Europe. Drawing on studies by researchers of the local Jewish diaspora and my own research on the intellectual culture of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (Jędrzejewski 2016, 2021, 2022 et al., see attached CV), I will present the Jewish forms of cultural sociability. I will discuss the issue of the distinctiveness of Lithuanian Jews (Litvaks) and also indicate the intellectual and cultural connections of Litvaks with the Jewish diaspora in other European countries. Using categories from the field of imagology, I will provide an analysis of the anti-Semitic discourse in the press and academic texts. The symbolic acts of exclusion of Jews will be investigated. Among other topics, the strategy of shaming will be discussed. This strategy is evident in journalistic texts where authors introduce an imaginative figure of a traveler arriving in the city and forming a negative impression of the local community based on encounters with local Jews. I will address the portrayal of Jews as strangers, not fitting into the image of a ‘civilized’ city. Examining these issues will facilitate the identification and description of the problem of publicly excluding the Jewish diaspora within the framework of the modernization discourse, despite internal modernization processes occurring within the diaspora itself.

For an introductory study on a Levantine mesocratic minority: Jews and power elite in the Ottoman Empire
Following their expulsion in 1492, the Sephardic Jews decided to leave Spain and settle in the Ottoman Empire. During the modern age, this group began to establish itself in various urban contexts such as Thessaloniki and Izmir. This work introduces, through the study of archival sources and studies conducted on the proposed topic, a broader work on the topic of relations between power elites in the Ottoman Levant. In fact, between the end of 17th century and especially for all 18th century, Jews began to develop a strong bond with members of the military caste of the Janissaries. The Jews, in the centers analyzed here, created a real middle class of a mercantile nature, which saw its apogee and the end of its prestige at the same time as that of the Janissaries. Through this introductory analysis we want to highlight how the relationship between the exponents of the Jewish mesocracy had an important role and above all how they managed to create an important “position” within the social and economic chessboards of the Ottoman Empire.

Stratégies matérielles et identitaires des diasporas : les Britanniquesface au droit d’aubaine dans la France au XVIIIe siècle
Cette communication a pour but d’examiner les interactions entre les communautés diasporiques et les institutions de la société d’accueil à partir du cas des Britanniques face au droit d’aubaine dans la France au XVIIIe siècle. Le droit d’aubaine, institution monarchique d’origine seigneuriale, consiste dans un droit royal de confisquer les successions des étrangers décédés sans être naturalisés, ni laisser d’un enfant né en France. Le moyen le plus sûr d’obvier à son effet est l’obtention de lettres de naturalité qui transforment un étranger en un sujet du roi. Le droit d’aubaine et la confiscation potentielle qu’il représente constituent le problème à la fois matériel et identitaire pour les diasporas : parce que ces derniers s’exposent à perdre non seulement leurs biens, mais aussi leur identité en tant que diasporas ou réfugiés à travers la naturalisation qu’ils peuvent parfois de facto être contraints d’obtenir. Face à cette circonstance défavorable, comment les diasporas ont-ils agi et quelles stratégies ont-ils prises pour la surmonter ? Nous tentons de répondre à cette question à travers une étude du cas des Britanniques réfugiés en France après la Glorieuse Révolution (1688), groupe de diasporas numériquement et qualitativement très important.
En effet, la question de droit d’aubaine reste longtemps un champ de recherches mal exploré dans l’historiographie sur les Britanniques en France au XVIIIe siècle. Les historiens s’interessent le plus souvent à la vie des communautés diasporiques ― les collèges et séminaires des réfugiés catholiques, les régiments irlandais et écossais dans les armées françaises, la cour d’exil à Saint-Germain-en-Laye, ou les négociants et armateurs installés dans l’Ouest ―, ou aux étapes qu’ils ont suivies pour s’intégrer dans la société d’accueil. Ces études donnent un bref regard sur leur statut juridique en France, mais les modalités dont ils se sont confrontés au droit d’aubaine ne sont pas analysées sauf s’il s’agit de la naturalisation. Ce manque d’intérêt pour les efforts des groupes ou des individus pour surmonter les difficultés provoquées par le droit d’aubaine marque également les études juridiques sur les conditions des étrangers en France et les recherches portant sur les politiques de la monarchie cherchant à exploiter les étrangers pour financer la guerre et industrialiser le royaume. Les enquêtes sur la naturalisation des étrangers, quant à elles, focalisent sur les naturalisés et marginalisent ceux qui restent dans un état précaire et ambigu d’étrangers ou apatride. La rencontre des Britanniques avec le droit d’aubaine, bien qu’elle représente un vrai et sérieux problème pour eux, n’est donc pas encore étudiée de manière approfondie.
Notre communication tente de mettre en lumière les manières dont les Britanniques ont agi contre le droit d’aubaine, en s’intérrogeant sur les deux questions suivantes. La première porte sur les rôles des réseaux diasporiques dans leurs tentatives d’éviter l’application du droit d’aubaine. Outre que la naturalisation, il existe plusieurs mesures préventives ou réactives contre le droit d’aubaine. D’abord, on peut disposer de ses biens par la donnation entre vifs : cet acte est autorisé même aux étrangers, sauf s’il n’est pas fait durant la dernière maladie. Puis on peut manifester sa volonté relative à ses biens à travers le testament : le droit de tester étant réservé aux sujets du roi, les parents des Britanniques décédés non naturalisés mais avec le testament se trouvent embarrassés de l’intervention du fisc royal poursuivant les successions, d’autant plus que le privilège d’exemption du droit d’aubaine en faveur des jacobites n’est pas renouvelé après la mort de Louis XIV. Pour contourner cette situation ennuieuse, il se peut que les Britanniques cachent ou transportent les biens du moribond ou du défunt avant l’arrivée des officiers royaux. Enfin, les parents des Britanniques décédés peuvent s’engager dans les procès pour obtenir la mainlevée de saisie et l’exemption du droit d’aubaine. Obligés de justifier leur parenté avec le défunt, ils rencontrent la difficulté de préparer les pièces justificatives à cause de la distance entre la France et les îles Britanniques et des persécutions du catholicisme empêchant de tenir les registres paroissiaux. Dans chaqu’une de ces démarches, comment les réseaux diasporiques des Britanniques ont été mobilisés et quelle place leur est attribuée dans leurs stratégies pour conserver les biens familiaux ? C’est cette question que nous aborderons dans la première partie de notre communication.
La deuxième question concerne l’identité diasporique. Bien que les réfugiés britanniques se trouvent dans un état d’apatride de fait et que certains d’entre eux y restent volontairement, le droit d’aubaine incite à les catégoriser selon le principe d’appartenance nationale et les définir soit comme Français, soit comme étrangers. Cela pose un problème notamment aux soldats irlandais dans les armées françaises, car le nombre d’entre eux ne prennent pas la peine d’obtenir des lettres de naturalité en se croyant exempts du droit d’aubaine en vertu des faveurs octroyées par Louis XIV à ceux qui ont suivi Jacques II vers la France. Cependant, le fait que ces faveurs ne sont ni consacrées en loi, ni renouvellées au XVIIIe siècle, sert de prétexte au fisc royal pour intervenir dans les successions, et les soldats irlandais sont par conséquent conduits à intenter une action en justice contre lui pour protéger les biens de leurs parents compatriotes. Dans les procès, quelle identité juridico-politique ont-ils stratégiquement choisie ? C’est-à-dire, ont-ils cherché à être considérés comme sujets britanniques pour profiter de la dispense mobilière du droit d’aubaine garantie aux sujets du roi d’Angleterre, ou bien, ont-ils avancé qu’ils étaient Français parce qu’ils étaient au service du roi de France, ou bien, ont-ils exigé d’être traités comme apatrides forcés à abandonner leur pays natal à cause des persécutions religieuses et des mesures punitives prises par le gouvernement anglais contre ceux qui s’enrôlaient dans les armées françaises ? La deuxième partie de notre communication sera consacrée à cette question de choix d’identité par les diasporas eux-mêmes, s’appuyant sur une analyse des factums rédigés lors de procès engagés relativement au droit d’aubaine et au statut des réfugiés irlandais.

My book manuscript examines how Jesuit authors from colonial Mexico progressively crafted a revolutionary language of universal rights during their exilic residence in the Papal States. Encountering the scientific, religious and artistic manifestations of the Enlightenment in central Italy, Francisco Clavijero, Rafael Landívar and Pedro Márquez published works that engaged in a critical dialogue with prevailing European theories of New World nature. However, in refuting an emerging discourse of New World racial difference, they not only offered an alternative perspective based on empirical evidence and their nostalgic memories: They helped establish the literary conditions of a politics of continental independence. By retracing how they each devised strategies of questioning Italian readers’ assumptions about the natural (Landívar), religious (Clavijero) and archeological dimensions (Márquez) of colonial Mexico, I reveal how they anticipated its formal emancipation from Spain.
Moving beyond scholarly approaches that view their works merely as nostalgic expressions of an ancien régime concept of identity and belonging (Cañizares-Esguerra 2002 & McManus 2018), I demonstrate how they crafted a poetics of continental independence. By examining their published writings in relation to more recently uncovered correspondence, I
establish a dialogue between critical debates about the root causes of the International Expulsion and Suppression of the Jesuits (Colombo and Guasti 2015 & Van Kley 2018) and scholarship about the Spanish American Wars of Independence (Adelman 2006, Entin 2018 & Rojas 2009). Considering these pivotal events as inextricably linked, I recast the discourse of Mexican emancipation from Spain in a multidisciplinary and multidirectional frame. By drawing from the recent interventions of intellectual historians, literary critics and religious studies scholars and from archival sources not previously examined, I reveal how Clavijero, Landívar and Márquez anticipated Mexico’s birth as a Catholic and mixed race nation—and gave voice to an incipient discourse of continental independence.
Synopsis
Torn from their homeland as a result of Charles III’s expulsion of the Society of Jesus from Spain and its empire, Francisco Clavijero, Rafael Landívar and Pedro Márquez joined a larger community of exiled Jesuits in the Papal States. During their exilic residence in central Italy, they each encountered the writings of eighteenth-century European naturalists who drew connections between a culture’s climate and its capacity to reason (e.g., Buffon, de Pauw and Robertson), positing an understanding of the New World as a degenerate continent. Dismayed by the disparaging views that influential European authors expressed about their native country, Clavijero, Landívar and Márquez each published works that offered an alternative perspective based on empirical evidence and their nostalgic memories.
In the process of contesting an incipient discourse of New World racial difference found in the writings of eighteenth-century European naturalists, they extolled colonial Mexico in an increasingly self-referential patriotic vocabulary. Producing a corpus of works across a range of genres (poetry, natural history and art criticism), languages (Spanish, Latin and Italian) and literary expressions (sermons, monographs and translations), all three authors contributed to an Italo-Hispanic print culture during the last quarter of the eighteenth century in the Papal States. By increasingly depicting their homeland as a discrete and sovereign branch of the broader Republic of Letters, they each anticipated the political vocabulary of Mexican independence.
Giving the discourse of creole patriotism a sharper expression, all three authors devised shared and distinct strategies of vindicating their homeland before an Italian reading public. By assuming the role of mediators between Italy and the Hispanic world, on the one hand, and between Europe and the Americas, on the other, Clavijero, Landívar and Márquez forged a strategic relation to enlightened discourses of reason and progress. Shifting between distinct life worlds (European versus Mesoamerican), knowledge systems (baroque versus enlightened) and authorial identities (Jesuit versus Mexican), they each helped expand the geography of reason in the broader Republic of Letters. In the process of serving as mediators between distinct cultures and reading publics, they transformed the discourse of creole patriotism in colonial Mexico into a revolutionary language of universal rights.
The product of nearly a decade of research in Italy, my book manuscript suggests that a closer examination of the Jesuit archive not only reveals how the fate of Clavijero, Landívar and Márquez was shaped by geopolitical forces beyond their control: It illuminates how they each anticipated Mexico’s formal emancipation from Spain. By drawing connections between their published works and more recently uncovered correspondence, I reveal how they registered popular discontent with the shifting dynamics of Spanish colonial rule. At the same time, by examining how they redrew their homeland's natural (Landívar), religious (Clavijero) and archeological dimensions (Márquez), I argue that they helped devise a model of fomenting anti-Spanish colonial sentiment on a continental scale—a model that found a republican and royalist expression in Simón Bolívar’s Jamaica Letter (1815) and Agustín de Iturbide’s Livorno Manifesto (1823).
In keeping with the aforementioned purposes, I recast their writings in their proper Italo Hispanic cultural context by drawing from the interventions of scholars across disciplines who have identified both the moderate and radical sources of the Enlightenment in the Italian peninsula (Bonazza 2021, Johns 2014 and Riall 2009). By probing how they each drew from the religious, artistic and political expressions of the Enlightenment in central Italy, I demonstrate how they forged a strategic relation to European discourses of reason and progress in their published works and correspondence. At the same time, I examine their textual strategies in relation to their distinct personal trajectories and exilic conditions, revealing how the International Expulsion and Suppression of the Jesuits set in motion a structure of discontent with the shifting dynamics of Spanish colonial rule evident in their works. In turn, by analyzing how Landívar, Clavijero and Márquez gave voice to this structure of discontent in a progressively sharper patriotic vocabulary, I suggest that they anticipated the discourse of continental emancipation from Spain.
Stemming from their arrival in Italy at different stages of their spiritual and intellectual development, they each extolled their homeland in a muted (Landívar), polemical (Clavijero) and revolutionary (Márquez) patriotic vocabulary. At the same time, by giving the discourse of creole patriotism a natural, religious and antiquarian expression, all three Jesuit authors not only prompted their Italian readers to question their assumptions about the New World: They instilled in their compatriots a bolder understanding of colonial Mexico’s place within the broader Republic of Letters. In the process of crafting a poetics of disenchantment with the shifting dynamics of Spanish colonial rule, they established an understanding of their homeland as a mixed race and Catholic community ready to forge its own path as an independent nation. However, rather than draw a causal connection between their poetics of disenchantment and the ultimate outcome of the continental wars of independence, I argue that they envisioned a future that could be mobilized for republican—or royalist—emancipatory purposes.

The long eighteenth century in India was marked by the crumbling of the imperial Mughal empire and the consequent decentralization and formation of regional empires. However, even as the empire itself was in tatters, the system and spirit of Mughal administration had an enduring impact upon the autonomous empires that succeeded it, who sought to emulate the same model as the Mughals. Part of the reason for this continuity was that as the Mughal Empire as a political structure was entering into a phase of decentralization, it was the loyalists and high placed nobles of the Empire itself who consolidated their powerbase in regional courts and urban centers. The flourishing of regional empire was characterized by reorientation of capital and systematic shift of power from absolute ruler to nobility as a class. Away as the nobles marched, they also took with them the agents who maintained the administrative and literary culture of the Mughal Empire, many of whom were obliged for economic and more general material reasons to migrate from Delhi to these newly prosperous centers of power. Three communities that stand out in North India for availing the employment opportunities opened up by the tolerant regimes, not just in the eighteenth century but since the early days of establishment of Islamic rule in India, were the Brahmans, Khatris and Kayasthas.
Of particular importance were the Khatris, who even before taking up the administrative opportunities provided by the Mughal regime had been a very mobile trading community of Punjab. Khatris had probably been traveling from the Punjab since the days of the Sultanate. Khatris had probably been traveling from the Punjab since the days of the Sultanate. Khatris would have found it easy to join caravans that had traversed the Khyber and other Indo-Afghan passes since ancient times. In Iran, Khatris both sold cloth and various other Indian goods in bazaars, such as Isfahan’s Maidan-i Shah, and lent money to merchants in the cash-starved Iranian economy. Logically, they must have found it rather easy to accommodate themselves in in high-Persianate culture of the Mughal Empire. Able administrators could become ministers and high-ranking officials in the centre as well as provinces and the Khatris, in turn, remained imperial loyalists throughout the life of the Empire. They provided valuable services to the Mughal empire, for instance, who could imagine the overhauling of the Mughal land revenue system under Akbar, if it were not for the able leadership of his finance minister Raja Todar Mal. This legacy survived and thrived long after Akbar’s reign and after the decline of the Mughals, continued in the regional states. These ties also provided the Khatris the means of social mobility and continued patronage in whole parts of the subcontinent, in the long eighteenth century. In fact, in Punjab itself, in face of Sikh revolts, the Khatris remained steadfast supporters of royal authority and when trade routes and centers began to be devastated by the Sikhs, they chose to migrate to Multan, Sindh, and Delhi and from thereon to regional states.
Muzaffar Alam and Sanjay Subramanyam have argued that the eighteenth century was arguably the century of the scribe in South Asian history and in this paper, we take up the lives and trajectories of one such father-son duo of scribes, who moved through the length of Hindustan in the eighteenth century and the networks of the ‘diasporic’ Khatri community, originally residents of the Punjab, not just help sustain them but move from the simple category of scribes and refashion themselves into poet-scholars. The first among the duo, Rai Mansa Ram was the Secretary of Nawab Nizamul Mulk, the first Nizam of Hyderabad and authored two historical works—"Risala-i-Darbar-i-Asafi" and "Maathir-i-Nizami". His son, Lachhmi Narayan "Shafiq" Aurangabadi, later became a celebrated Urdu poet. What is noteworthy is that is the scribe and later scholar-poets made the transition from the Mughals to the regional empire and later to the colonial regime, their character and function didn’t remain static in time instead, their lives and works reflect the new social and cultural realities of their time.

Ruination, Chronic Illness, and Networks of Care in the Long Eighteenth Century
Ruin and ruination can be and have been written on both actual and literary bodies. My larger, monograph-length project, Ruin and Remedyes: Women’s Bodies as Imperial Debris and their Medicinal Management in the Long Eighteenth Century, focuses on ruination and ruins as a requirement and consequence of imperialism. I reframe the idea of ruins to include women’s bodies, both fictional and actual, to consider ruin specifically in its function as a specter, a reflection, a reminder of what Walter Benjamin calls the “barbarism” of political projects. This project is a revision of my dissertation and extends and complicates historical arguments regarding the ruins of imperialism to argue people are also left with the debris of bodies—physical, narrative, metaphorical.
Ruin and Remedyes begins with a discussion of ruin and ruination, exploring how they function as a lens through which we can re-view historical context. Ruination, the ongoing creation of ruin, continues across historical time and exists in physical and remembered forms, as well as textually constructed memorials like novels and life writing. I extend this concept to include people, especially women, although excluding nineteenth-century “ruined woman” who has been sexually compromised. I connect bodily ruin to postcolonial ideas of “civilizing” machinations and colonialism’s ruins. Examining the moments where ruination is experienced or prevented, where regulatory standards regarding women’s bodies are troubled, or where violence is imposed, reveals that a woman’s ruin has very little to do with her sexual activity and everything to do with the way she experiences imperialism and enables this system to continue.
Within this larger project, my current research focuses on chronic illness and domestic medicine as intimacies of imperialism. Lisa Lowe describes imperial intimacies as a heuristic for observing processes that “develop modern liberal subjects and modern spheres of social life” and point toward a political economy of connection delineating intimacies themselves (Lowe 17-18). Domestic medicine and home remedies were points of connection between imperial subjects in all stations, forming a network of intimacies flung as far an imperial diasporic subjects could travel. Pharmacies and apothecaries are “translocal enterprises,” according to H.E. Bian, “connecting the world of letters to that of the marketplace bridging nations and continents” (Bian 8). More intimate and personal than a pharmacy, though, were family letters and home recipe books, commonplace books and heirloom remedies. Such connections, formed upon the experience of acute and chronic illness, created a network of imperial intimacies.
As an example, one relatively ordinary upper-class British woman, Eliza Fowke, writes to her aunts from India in the mid-eighteenth century. She sends them “Backbane tea,” to be used for the health and wellness of a family member. The name or relationship of the family member is unreadable in the letter due to damage to the paper. The woman, likely Jane Maskelyne, must continue to drink the tea and “go on with it regularly for she must not expect to be cured of it at once now” (Eliza Fowke to Jane and Sarah Maskelyne, 1 February 1749/50). She has been ill for “so many Years but have patience & think that slow remedyes are often Surest.” Eliza has sent the tea to provide long-term care for another woman in her family, a display of her belief in herbal remedies for illness and a demonstration of her attempt to care for a family member from such a great distance as India to England. In this time period, “’East India’ accounted to 13.3 percent” of imports to Britain in 1752-54 (Finn & Smith 6). They had not yet reached their peak, as they would in the mid 1780s, but such sending of goods both in small packages and larger merchant ships was a substantial portion of the imports in Britain in the 1750s. Eliza engages here in the commerce of the EIC and the early British imperial governance of the East Indian coast. In sending the tea to her aunts and following up, Eliza incorporates the women into the activities of building colonies on the Coromandel Coast. Eliza also demonstrates an active network between her diasporic position as a colonizer and her aunts remaining in London. She has sent not only the letter, but goods intended for the care and keeping of her family in the perpetuation of their position within the intimacies reified by Eliza’s letters.
In the same time period and from similar locations, officers in the British East India Company wrote home requesting homemade medicinal remedies, teas, and tinctures for the treatment of any number of illnesses. The flow of medicinal intimacy moved outward toward the colonizer, as well. For example, one medicinal treatment appears a few times: Velno’s Vegetable Syrup. The syrup is supposedly a treatment for venereal disease and was sent to officers in the British East India Company while abroad in India. The officers presumably formed sexual networks in India that they then treated the consequences of using their connections with networks in England. Two networks work at once, both of them transactional and dependent upon their position within imperial networks and felt in bodies.
Domestic remedies and documentation of illness travelled between people around the globe through interconnected family and friends in diasporic colonial positions. While these networks of care helped many, they also pointedly do not help those outside those networks. Imperialism requires boundaries to define itself negatively in relation to the colonized subject; those who do not receive the benefits of British medicinal practices, and those whose indigenous knowledge is erased by a colonizer, are the Other by which the imperial power defines itself.
While Disability Studies is a growing and thriving subfield of study, chronic pain and chronic illness remain understudied. My work takes up this mantle of studying long-term illness that is little understood both now and during the eighteenth century, using imperialism as a beginning lens. Domestic medicine is practically inexhaustible as a field of study, given its proclivity for variations in recipes, documentation, distribution, archival recording, etc. My project combines these two fields using Lowe’s theorization of intimacies of imperialism to consider illness and its remedies as they travel through global connections.

A lo largo del siglo XVIII, son varias las comunidades de origen europeo que destacan sobre el fenómeno de la diáspora. La vasca será, de hecho, una de ellas. La siguiente comunicación propone un acercamiento a lo ocurrido entre País Vasco, Navarra y la Nueva España, abriéndonos a la reflexión.
En la Edad Moderna los vascos emplearán la agencia en Corte como instrumento de defensa y representación de sus intereses, fenómeno reforzado con la fundación de cofradías en los principales núcleos de la Monarquía Hispánica: Sevilla en 1530, Cádiz en 1625, Lima en 1635, la formada por navarros en Madrid de 1684, la de vascos de 1715 con su “agente de las dependencias de Indias”, es decir, su representante exclusivo para tratar los asuntos americanos, o la Cofradía de Aránzazu de Manila, de 1749. Esta red, bien conectada, contaba con su epicentro en Madrid, donde la cofradía de San Ignacio fundada con capitales americanos lograba destacarse como “un quid pro quo a escala imperial y transatlántica”. Esta “dimensión universal” ayudará a configurar una “institutional entangled global network” vasco-navarra dentro de la Monarquía.
Estas organizaciones contaban con una misión litúrgica cargada de connotaciones identitarias al crearse bajo el amparo de un santo patrón o patrona de origen vasco, como San Ignacio de Loyola, San Francisco Xavier o la virgen de Aránzazu. Al celebrar sus festividades, los vascos emigrados fortalecían lazos sociales e identitarios, distinguiéndose sobre el resto. Por otro lado, conseguían desplegar vínculos de solidaridad entre naturales, aunque fueron las transacciones económicas y comerciales y la defensa de los intereses manifestados por las instituciones vascas sus principales cometidos.
En la Nueva España, fue la mexicana Cofradía de Aránzazu la más importante de todas, aunque también consistió en un fenómeno en expansión. Surgirán organizaciones similares en Guadalajara, Zacatecas, Veracruz, Puebla o San Luis Potosí, es decir, en los núcleos urbanos más importantes del virreinato.
La cofradía de la Ciudad de México logrará importantes éxitos a lo largo del Dieciocho. Por un lado, se constituye como organización al margen de la jurisdicción metropolitana ordinaria, bajo amparo directo de la Corona - aspecto que trasladará a su gran obra. Por otro, funda el Colegio de las Vizcaínas, institución encargada de ofrecer educación a las hijas de los emigrados e inversiones de capitales a sus paisanos. Su importancia económica fue tal que, en palabras de Muriel, “se perfila, por el monto de sus inversiones, como el motor más importante de la economía novohispana”.
La institución sólo admitía donativos de origen vasco-navarro, de igual modo que el colegio priorizaba a sus hijas. Esta actitud endogámica resulta imprescindible no sólo para salvaguardar su identidad, sino para proteger sus transacciones, negocios que encumbran a sus miembros dentro de la economía virreinal. La idéntica política matrimonial practicada por estas familias, reforzará, además, el entramado. Así es como los miembros más destacados de la organización lograron conformar esa “élite comercial y empresarial semihereditaria y prácticamente endógama” retratada por Brading. Fueron, de hecho, aquellos que manejaron el
destino de México. Familias como los Castañiza, Fagoaga, Ycaza, Yraeta, Bassoco o el marquesado de San Miguel de Aguayo, aparecen como firmantes del Acta de Independencia de 1821.
Por último, cabría destacar su hermanamiento con dos de las instituciones vascas más importantes del periodo, la Cofradía de San Ignacio de Madrid y la Real Sociedad Bascongada de los Amigos del País [RSBAP], constituyéndose en su sede novohispana y dando lugar a un marco atlántico triangular. Sin embargo, es la dimensión transoceánica de un fenómeno como la educación femenina, lo más destacado del proyecto.
Vistos los antecedentes, ¿en qué consistirá mi propuesta? La trayectoria de esta institución ayuda a explicar parte del fenómeno migratorio vasco-navarro a la Nueva España, el indudable peso de su comunidad dentro de dicho espacio y el establecimiento de redes económicas y de poder. Sus vínculos con la primera institución ilustrada en la historia de España, la RSBAP, así como la fundación del primer colegio laico en la historia de América, abrirán nuevas vías para el debate, en la línea de los temas planteados para el encuentro.
En primer lugar, quisiera acercarme a las bases que explican el fenómeno migratorio vasco, historia vista como exitosa y apoyada en multitud de factores. Tras haber explicado el despliegue de esa “institutional entangled global network” mencionada, me centraré en la Cofradía de Aránzazu de la Ciudad de México. Mi interés por la misma nace de mi proyecto de tesis doctoral, cuando tuve la ocasión de realizar una estancia de investigación en el Archivo Histórico del Colegio de las Vizcaínas. Desde entonces, mis investigaciones sobre la historia de los vascos y las vascas en América han sido una constante, como mi estancia postdoctoral en los Estados Unidos de América prueba.
El análisis propuesto ayudará a desarrollar toda una serie de argumentos en la línea de los temas planteados para el presente encuentro: instituciones diaspóricas y estrategias desplegadas para cohesionar a la propia comunidad, sus lazos con el desarrollo económico y político de la Nueva España, los vínculos institucionales, económicos y culturales con el lugar de origen, o la historia de las mujeres. La trayectoria del Colegio de las Vizcaínas me permitirá, además, observar el fenómeno de la educación femenina, tema de sumo interés unido a la historia de las mujeres.
Con todo, esta propuesta tiene como principal objetivo el debate académico. Por ello me gustaría lanzar, como punto final, la siguiente cuestión. Parece evidente el interés del grupo vasco navarro por construir una sólida comunidad en México. También podríamos aseverar lo mismo, con cuantos matices sean necesarios, en relación al concepto nación. Y ello sin mencionar su peso en la construcción de México. Ahora bien, en conjunto, ¿puede esta red considerarse como supranacional? La historiografía vasca señala la existencia de un lobby vasco-navarro dentro de la Monarquía Hispánica, apoyado, claro está, en el fenómeno de la diáspora. Sería de sumo interés contrastar y compartir todo ello con el resto de participantes.

Exotic Geographies: Mapping Louisiana and Venezuela in the 18th Century
My dissertation title, Exotic Geographies: Mapping Louisiana and Venezuela in the 18th century, explores the representation of the exotic in two 18th-century travel accounts: Histoire de la Louisiane (1758) written by Antoine-Simon Le Page du Pratz and El Orinoco Ilustrado (1741) written by Joseph Gumilla. These works, significant for their authors' direct experience in the described lands, provide a unique lens to examine Louisiana and Provincial de Venezuela in the context of the 18th century. The study integrates literary analysis, history, cartography, and semiotics to examine how these texts and their paratextual elements such as illustrations, maps, indexes, and typography3interact and contribute to our understanding of exotic.
In this dissertation, I seek to explore how text transfers knowledge about exotic elements such as Genipa Americana and Bixa Orellana, as well as cultural objects like the Indigenous Sacred Axis and Baston de Autoridad, and communities including Cannessy and Nirgua, to paratextual elements like italic words, indexes, illustrations, and maps. Central questions include: How does the connection between text and paratext contribute to the representation and understanding of the exotic in 18th-century travel narratives? Furthermore, how do these paratextual elements reflect and shape the portrayal of Indigenous and African cultural practices, particularly in their interactions with cultural objects and uses of local flora?
Central to this inquiry is the notion of the exotic. Peter Mason conceptualized it as a process of decontextualization from original contexts4. The research scrutinizes how exotic elements are depicted through repetitive descriptions across various cultural artifacts. Utilizing the colonial semiosis approach, this research interprets the signs embedded in the accounts, illustrations, and maps within the contact zone where diverse cultures converge, creating new meanings.
The study also investigates how editorial decisions such as account structure, image inclusion, indexes, and typography shape the comprehension of the text. It delves into how the interaction between text and paratext as an example of convenientia facilitates the understanding of the narrative, and how this colonial semiosis and their interplay are perceived and interpreted. The research studies the metadiscourse8included in the text and paratext.
Particular attention is given to maps as vital paratextual elements that shaped 18th-century perceptions of people and places, reflecting Europe’s expanding global consciousness. These maps, embedded in the travel accounts, are analyzed as texts, revealing how they represent not just geographical locations but also narratives of natural history, indigenous peoples, and maroon communities.
The research commences with an analysis of paratextual elements in works such as Les Livres des Merveilles (1412?) also known as Manuscript 2810 written by the Boucicaut Master for the Duke of Burgundy, Jean sans Peur, Les Singularitez De La France Antarctique Autrement Nommée Amerique (1558) written by André Thevet, De la Natural Hystoria de las Indias (1526) written by Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo y Valdez, and De Nieuwe En Onbekende Weereld (1671) written by Arnoldus Montanus. The inclusion of a Dutch account serves as an introduction to 18th-century Louisiana and Provincia de Venezuela, known as Tierra Firme, because it shows how they were perceived by another empire external to French or Spanish.
This research does not aim to trace the genre's evolution as done by Percy Adams, nevertheless, doing a close reading of these accounts concerning the description of natural plants, cultural objects, and people will allow me to demonstrate how du Pratz and Gumilla follow the travel literature genre and in which ways their works are distinctive.
Considering the focus of this colloquium, I propose reading cultural objects and plants as examples of diaspora. For instance, Bixa Orellana was used for weaving maromas (ropes, cordages), gilding frames, and medicinal processes. Europeans’ reception of the use of these plants demonstrates acceptance for medical and practical uses, but rejection of their use for painting the skin, as done by Indigenous peoples. This aspect highlights the reception and rejection of a plant originally from the Americas.
I analyze this in the second chapter of my dissertation titled Beyond the Written Word: Analyzing Paratextual Narratives in Colonial Literature. The focus of this chapter is on the cultural significance and representation of Genipa Americana (du Pratz) and Bixa Orellana (Gumilla), two plants with deep-rooted importance for indigenous communities. By examining these specific examples, the chapter aims to uncover the layers of meaning that paratextual elements can convey about indigenous knowledge and perspectives, which might be overlooked or understated in the main text. The mention of these plants corresponds to the need in the 18th century for dye sources that supplemented the use of saffron and madder in Europe.

Dans la recherche sur le rôle des réseaux diasporiques dans la circulation et l’articulation d’idées ou de pratiques culturelles, la focale est souvent posée sur les interactions entre une diaspora donnée et sa communauté d’accueil, ou plus rarement sur les caractéristiques du phénomène diasporique. L’analyse des échanges croisés entre plusieurs diasporas est beaucoup moins fréquente, mais pourrait offrir des pistes utiles pour l’interprétation des dynamiques intellectuelles du XVIIIe siècle et pour notre compréhension des Lumières. L’étude de cas de la Société littéraire de Lausanne, une société savante qui a rassemblé des hommes de lettres issus de différentes régions du continent au cours de deux périodes d’activité entre 1772 et 1783, permet précisément de mener une telle analyse. Pratiquant une forme de sociabilité alors courante à l’échelle continentale, ses membres – recrutés au sein de l’élite locale et surtout des communautés d’étrangers séjournant en ville – s’assemblaient hebdomadairement pour discuter de questions d’actualité dans l’Europe des Lumières. Leurs débats et leurs essais, répertoriés dans l’abondante collection manuscrite inédite de l’institution, permettent d’illustrer la manière dont ce collectif cosmopolite approchait, analysait et comprenait des thèmes centraux dans la pensée des Lumières comme la sensibilité, les préjugés, la justice pénale et le luxe.
Comme l’a mis en évidence la recherche récente, Lausanne affiche dans la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle une vie culturelle, intellectuelle et associative exceptionnellement riche pour une petite ville provinciale d’à peine 7000 habitants. Située au croisement des principaux axes routiers du continent, au cœur de l’Europe, elle s’affirme comme une étape
presqu’incontournable pour les voyages de formation de l’époque – en particulier ceux des élites britanniques, allemandes, polonaises et russes – et attire en même temps bon nombre d’hommes et de femmes de la France voisine en quête de distractions. Au XVIIIe siècle, Lausanne couple donc son rôle traditionnel de lieu d’accueil du Refuge huguenot avec celui de centre majeur du tourisme naissant. Stimulées par cette ambiance internationale, les élites locales s’offrent – et offrent à leurs hôtes étrangers – une sociabilité de première qualité, en phase avec les pratiques des capitales du continent, appréciée par des figures illustres comme Voltaire et Edward Gibbon. Parmi les institutions lausannoises, la Société littéraire a été une des plus brillantes et de loin la plus cosmopolite, mais elle n’a jamais fait l’objet d’une étude approfondie avant ma thèse de doctorat, soutenue en octobre 2021.
Guidée par des idéaux tels que la tolérance, le cosmopolitisme et l’indépendance intellectuelle, la Société littéraire de Lausanne visait tant la « recherche de la vérité », comme l’indique son règlement, que l’agrément de ses membres. Ses assemblées hebdomadaires étaient régies par une organisation remarquablement souple comparée à celle des autres institutions similaires de l’époque. Cela témoigne de la nécessité d’accommoder un collectif cosmopolite d’individus issus de différentes régions du continent, de l’Écosse à la Russie, en passant par l’Angleterre, les Provinces-Unies, la France, Genève, la Pologne, la Saxe, la Prusse, la Franconie et le Wurtemberg, parmi lesquels figurent le théologien vaudois Gabriel Mingard (un des principaux collaborateurs de l’Encyclopédie dite « d’Yverdon »), le juriste français Antoine-Michel Servan (un des principaux partisans des thèses béccariennes en France) et l’helléniste écossais John Gillies (qui deviendra plus tard historien royal de Grande-Bretagne). Les débats de la société ont à leur tour porté surtout sur des sujets de portée universelle, sans lien avec le contexte local et touchant principalement à l’étude des êtres humains et de leur vie en société, ce qui justifie de considérer cette institution comme un foyer paneuropéen des Lumières.
Parmi les thèmes débattus dans la Société littéraire de Lausanne, il y en a quatre en particulier qui permettent d’interroger les dynamiques de circulation et articulation d’idées au croisement de différentes diasporas. La sensibilité, tout d’abord, s’affiche comme un sujet de grand intérêt pour tous les sociétaires indépendamment de leurs origines, comme le montrent les débats récurrents à ce sujet, et donne lieu à des interprétations partagées de manière transversale, en ligne avec les tendances continentales de l’époque, soulignant le caractère vertueux d’une sensibilité authentique et les extrêmes vicieux alimentés par l’effet de mode du roman sentimental. La question de préjugés, ensuite, soulève des dissensions importantes entre les membres qui occupent des rôles dirigeants dans les institutions de l’époque – qui soutiennent l’importance des préjugés pour la stabilité de la société – et ceux qui au contraire se trouvent relégués dans des positions subalternes et voyent les préjugés comme un frein au bonheur de l’humanité. La justice pénale, de sa part, témoigne du succès des thèses abolitionnistes de Beccaria mais montre aussi des lignes de fracture géographiques autour de la légitimité de la peine de mort. Le luxe, enfin, produit un débat riche en contradictions, en particulier en ce qui concerne les bienfaits du commerce et des manufactures, qui suscitent la méfiance des membres locaux, issus d’une région agricole relativement pauvre, et le soutien de ceux issus de régions plus développées économiquement.
Dans mon intervention au séminaire, je présenterai d’abord le contexte lausannois et les caractéristiques organisationnelles de la Société littéraire, et j’approfondirai ensuite les débats de ses membres autour de ces quatre thèmes. En m’appuyant sur mes recherches doctorales, je montrerai que la Société littéraire de Lausanne ne peut pas être réduite à une expression de la pensée de réforme locale ou à des « Lumières helvétiques », mais qu’elle encourage à remettre en discussion l’interprétation des Lumières comme un phénomène pluriel divisé suivant des lignes de fracture régionales ou confessionnelles. L’activité et la production intellectuelle de la société se structurent autour d’un processus dialectique entre le niveau global et le niveau local, entre des cadres conceptuels partagés à l’échelle continentale et les réalités concrètes vécues par les différents réformateurs dans leurs contextes locaux. Élargir la focale des études sur les Lumières à l’échelle du continent européen, non pas dans une perspective globale ou comparative mais en interrogeant ce processus dialectique qui s’opère entre les dimensions continentale et locale, pourrait nous aider à mieux saisir les Lumières et leur héritage.

L’exil au-delà de la traduction : la contribution philosophique de Pierre Coste à la question de la raison des animaux dans l’Essai de Locke.
Dans cette étude, nous explorons comment l’exil, au-delà d’une simple une contrainte, devient un terrain propice au développement et à la diffusion transnationale de nouvelles perspectives intellectuelles, à travers la figure emblématique de Pierre Coste. Ce traducteur huguenot, poussé à l’exil suite à la révocation de l’Édit de Nantes en 1685, est célèbre pour ses traductions des œuvres de John Locke. Évoluant au sein du réseau diasporique huguenot d’éditeurs, imprimeurs et intellectuels, et influencé par la dynamique transnationale du 18e siècle, Coste a dépassé le rôle traditionnel du traducteur pour devenir un médiateur culturel majeur et une figure centrale dans le paysage de la pensée philosophique de son époque. Sa réalisation la plus remarquable, la traduction de l’Essai sur l’entendement humain de Locke, publiée en 1700, fut effectuée dans des circonstances exceptionnelles, alors qu’il résidait avec Locke à Essex, au Royaume-Uni, recommandé par Locke lui-même comme précepteur pour le fils de Lady Masham. Cette traduction dépasse la simple transposition linguistique ; elle représente un échange de cultures et d’idées, où Coste n’a pas seulement traduit le texte de Locke, mais a également contribué au débat philosophique, en intégrant ses propres contestations et interprétations, en particulier sur la raison des animaux, sujet d’importance philosophique majeure à cette époque et au cœur de mes recherches doctorales.
La présente proposition vise à examiner la contribution philosophique de Coste sur le thème de la raison animale au 18e siècle, mettant en lumière comment Coste, naviguant habilement entre fidélité au texte et autonomie intellectuelle, a initié des débats fondamentaux qui préfigurent et influencent les philosophes et naturalistes de la génération suivante, tant au Royaume-Uni qu’en France, tels que Hume, Condillac, Buffon et Le Roy, qui constituent l’axe central de mon doctorat. Comme révélé dans mes recherches précédentes, ces auteurs ont été essentiels dans la reconfiguration de la pensée sur la raison animale à l’époque des Lumières. Profondément influencés par Locke tout en se positionnant comme ses critiques, ces quatre auteurs reconnaissent aux animaux des facultés intellectuelles semblables à celles des humains, conférant ainsi une dimension philosophique à l’animalité, aspect qui demeure ambigu dans l’œuvre de Locke (Guichet, 2006, p. 77). Précurseur de ces quatre auteurs en ce qui concerne la raison des animaux, Coste est le premier à mettre en lumière l’ambiguïté de l’Essai, lançant des débats comme celui sur l’impact de l’instinct sur la tabula rasa et soulignant l’importance de confronter les thèses empiristes aux observations sur les animaux.
Cette proposition, en écho à Exiles and Expatriates in the History of Knowledge de Peter Burke (2017), se concentre sur « les conséquences positives de l’exil, le versant lumineux de la sombre nuée » (Burke, 2017, p. 8), et explore la « réception inventive des idées et savoirs » générés en exil (Ibid., p. 33). Selon Burke, les exilés emploient l’une des trois stratégies suivantes : l’assimilation à la culture de leur pays d’accueil, la préservation de leur culture d’origine en recréant une communauté ségréguée à l’étranger, ou l’intégration des deux cultures, cette dernière étant la plus fructueuse (Ibid., p. 9). Coste illustre l’intégration : vivant 50 ans en Angleterre, il s’est intégré à la culture britannique tout en préservant son autonomie intellectuelle, défendant souvent les philosophes français contre les critiques « nationalistes » de Locke (Hamou, 2017, p. 84). Après la mort de Locke, Coste devient éditeur et promeut en Angleterre des auteurs français, dont La Fontaine, La Bruyère, Racine et Montaigne, ce dernier essentiel pour ses notes sur les animaux dans l’Essai.
Cette étude est pertinente pour le séminaire des jeunes dix-huitièmistes de la SIEDS car elle explore comment les diasporas diffusaient la culture de manière transnationale, d’une manière différente de la traduction et de la critique littéraire. En examinant l’œuvre de Coste au-delà de la traduction, nous soulignons comment son travail devient un espace de médiation culturelle, de création de savoir et de débat philosophique, dont l’influence s’étend au-delà de la France et du Royaume-Uni, atteignant également les Pays-Bas, l’Allemagne et l’Italie, où ses œuvres étaient diffusées. Considérant la philosophie comme une composante culturelle, nous explorons également l’impact de la diaspora huguenote sur la culture d’origine, notamment par l’influence de Coste sur des penseurs français. Étant donné le développement intellectuel et philosophique provoqué par les travaux de Coste dans différents pays, cette étude aborde également les diasporas en tant que ressources culturelles et intellectuelles. Enfin, nous mettons en lumière un événement singulier dans l’histoire diasporique du livre, en traitant d’une situation privilégiée et atypique où le traducteur en exil établit un dialogue et cohabite avec l’auteur.
Cette proposition apporte à la fois une contribution originale aux études des diasporas du 18e siècle et sur Pierre Coste. Burke cite Coste pour sa diffusion des idées de Locke, sans détailler sa contribution. Une analyse approfondie a été réalisée par Delphine Soulard, qui examine les traducteurs exilés de Locke soulignant le caractère créatif de leur travail, y compris l’influence de Coste sur Locke, contraint à réviser son texte face aux interventions du traducteur – l’effet boomerang (Soulard, 2011, p. 758)3. Elle n’approfondit toutefois pas l’analyse des notes de Coste dans l’Essai. Philippe Hamou a examiné ces notes, dont celles portant sur les animaux (Hamou, 2017, p. 88). Tout en mettant l’accent sur l’évolution des affiliations philosophiques de Coste avec la parution successive de nouvelles éditions de sa traduction, Hamou ne s’attarde pas non plus sur l’importance philosophique des notes de Coste sur les animaux, et encore moins sur leur réception dans divers pays.
