Course Copying FAQ

Link to Course Copy request tracker is below!

Q: What gets copied during course copying?

A: Everything. This includes due dates, calendar items and custom content (such as teacher contact information, syllabus, course announcements, graphics, and so on).

Q: What do I have to edit once copying is complete?

A: You will have to edit the items mentioned above if you are a) having an old course copied to a new one and/or b) having another teacher's course copied to your own.

Q: Are there any restrictions on course copying?

A: Normally we allow unrestricted course copying. However if there are significant changes to the Online Middle & High School platform between school years, or we as a school decide to use a different type of course in the same system, there may be restrictions on course copying. We will let you know what these might be - you should just be aware that this is always a possibility.

Q: How can I request that my courses be copied?

A: You can make requests for course copying in my Course Copy Tracker, linked directly below.

It is important that you provide exact course names. I will not guess or assume about what you want copied to what.

Q: What is an exact course name?

A: It looks like this: ENG108BE2_SumEng9CA_Sec1_Tri3_20-21.

All course names will have the same elements divided by the _underscore_ character.

Please copy and paste the name, preferably "as plain text" (right click the cell you are pasting into to see this option). Please do not try to type it in, because you might accidentally leave out part of it.

Q: When will courses be copied?

A: Our goal is for your courses to be ready for you to edit and update within a week of your due date for course setup. These due dates will be established by your lead teacher. I notify all teachers when all copying is done; however, you may check the tracker any time to see the status of your course. I copy them in the order they are placed on the tracker.

Copying summit courses - especially English and Math courses - takes time. It will not all happen in a day.

Q: What do these different statuses on the tracker mean?

A:

  • No status = copying has not begun.

  • Cleared = the destination course (the course you want copied TO) has been completely cleared of its default content and can now be copied to.

  • Complete = the original course has been copied to the destination course and you can now edit/update.

  • Error = something went wrong in the copying process, and I will indicate that in the notes or with an email.

  • No Copy = I don't mind if you want to put a year's worth of courses on the tracker at the beginning of the year. But I will not be doing all of that copying at the beginning of the year. So I only select this for courses scheduled to begin in a future semester, and I erase it later.

Q: Can you copy just one lesson or quiz or unit?

A: Yes. But in these cases, I'm going to ask you, the teacher, to either hide/exclude from grades, or delete, whatever it is that the copied item will be replacing. I will not delete individual content items from active courses.

Since I don't have a tracker for these requests, I will ask you to put the request in an email with the following information:

  • The exact name of the course you want to copy from.

  • The exact location of the item(s) you want copied. Be specific. Unit 1, Lesson 1.1, the quiz called "whatever" - use the exact names and numbers seen in the course, that you would give to lost students.

  • The exact name of the course you want to copy it to.

  • I at least need a unit number you want it copied to. If you provide more details, I can move it into place. Otherwise, you will have to move it where you like.
