CoMPETENCY BASED EDUCATION

A More "Personalized" Way of Learning!

Competency-based programs assess and advance students based on their demonstrated mastery of skills and knowledge. The competency-based model removes the constraints of “seat time” and allows for student-driven learning inside and outside of the classroom. This approach can make education more relevant both to students and to employers.

In essence, CBE is a 180 degree change from the standard learning dynamic. Students are encouraged to take accountability for their education by going at the pace they are most comfortable. With CBE, students have the ability to show mastery in non-traditional ways, increasing growth in real-world skills. For example, a student who demonstrates mastery in algebraic instruction can accelerate to the next level, thereby always progressing forward in their individual education. The same can be said for a student who may struggle in this area, who then can receive additional support from their teacher and peers until proven competent.

Competency Based Education is individual, flexible, and achievable!

What is a competency?

A competency is a defined learning unit. It is a discrete set of knowledge, an attitude, a disposition, or an ability. A unit of competency satisfies the credit hour or course as the basic measurement of student progress.

Competencies are adaptable to every curriculum and cross-disciplinary. It is a transformation, not a reformation, meaning it builds upon the established way of learning, and personalizes it. It impels students to take responsibility for their own education, and allows them to advance or remain on any targeted area.
