Izumo Taisha
https://www.izumo-kankou.gr.jp/english/4760
Izumo Taisha is one of the oldest shrines in Japan, and it is considered to be the second most important shrine. (The most important shrine is the Ise Grand Shrine, which is dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu.) Izumo Taisha is dedicated to Okuninushi, who is a god of marriage and involved in Japan's creation mythology. In most of Japan October is the month of no gods, but at Izumo Taisha it is the month of the gods; all the gods from all over Japan gather at Izumo Taisha.
Every 60 years, Izumo Taisha is renewed. This renewal involves extensive examination of the current structure. The existing structure is carefully dismantled, parts that are in need of repair are replaced, and then it is put back together. The last renewal was in 2017 and you can see more information about it on the Shimizu Corporation website.
When you visit Izumo Taisha, can you tell which elements are newer and which are older?

There is also a cafe in the Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo.
Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo
https://www.izm.ed.jp/english/
Located just next to Izumo Taisha Shrine, people affectionately call this museum RekiHaku (meaning history museum).
Scholars have speculated that the ancient, original Izumo Taisha Shrine was very different from the current shrine. There is evidence to support the idea that the original shrine was a towering structure on stilts. In the year 2000, huge posts made of 3 banded trees were found in the grounds of Izumo Taisha Shrine. In RekiHaku, you can see models of the ancient shrine and the huge posts that were found. Here is a video showing the excavation site.
The museum has audio/written guidance available on iPods which are free to use in the museum. Or you can download the app to your own device!
