Via any major airport (Tokyo*, Nagoya, Osaka*, Fukuoka), fly into either:
Izumo Airport (IZO)
(JAL: Japan Airlines)
35 minutes by bus to Matsue Station
Yonago Airport (YGJ)
(ANA: All Nippon Airways)
45 minutes by bus to Matsue Station
From either airport, you can take a bus to Matsue Station. The buses are timed to the flight arrivals.
You should check flights to both airports from your initial airport as the main carrier at each airport is a member of a different alliance. Depending on your home airport's carrier, prices will vary.
***Important Note: Tokyo and Osaka both have 2 airports with international flights. So make sure that you are transferring through the same airport or that you allow time for a limousine bus/train between the airports. Tokyo has Narita (NRT) and Haneda (HND). Osaka has Kansai (KIX) and Itami (ITM).
See information on the Visit Matsue website.
You can get to Matsue by train from major cities via Okayama.
The Sunrise Izumo is a night train that runs between Tokyo and Izumo, stopping in Matsue.
See the JPRail website for information and pictures of the Sunrise Izumo.
Shinkansen trains stop in Okayama, where you can catch the Yakumo train which runs between Okayama and Izumo, stopping in Matsue.
***If you plan to use trains in Japan, you should purchase a Japan Rail Pass before coming. It is a pass that is only available to non-residents and makes traveling by train much cheaper.
See information on the Visit Matsue website.
You can also get to Matsue by highway bus.
This is the cheapest way to travel.
