Ipswich Romanian Community - Cultural Visit to Christchurch Mansion
Let's Explore Together
On Sunday, 31st May, Ipswich Romanian Community took part in a special cultural visit to Christchurch Mansion with a group of 25 adults and children, as part of our ongoing “Let’s Explore Together” project.
The visit included a guided tour of the Constable exhibition, focusing on the life and work of John Constable, one of Britain’s most important landscape painters, widely known for his iconic depictions of the Suffolk countryside and rural life.
Participants had the opportunity to explore the exhibition in a friendly and accessible way, with activities designed to support both cultural understanding and English language learning as part of our wider community education programme.
Following the tour, families took part in a creative art workshop led by artist Sarah Jones. The workshop focused on the “Portable Portrait” activity, where participants used acrylic and watercolour paints to create expressive portraits inspired by Constable’s artistic style. This hands-on session encouraged creativity, confidence, and engagement for both children and adults.
After the workshop, all participants enjoyed a shared vegetarian lunch kindly provided as part of the programme. Children also received small gift bags with art materials, adding an extra moment of joy to the experience.
The day concluded with time spent together in Christchurch Park, where families were able to relax, socialise, and build new connections. Children made new friends, while parents discussed future community activities and upcoming events.
This visit forms part of the Ipswich Romanian Community’s ongoing commitment to cultural learning, integration, and English language development through real-life experiences and community engagement.
We would like to sincerely thank the team at Christchurch Mansion for their warm hospitality and support, as well as artist Sarah Jones for her inspiring workshop, and all volunteers who helped make this event possible.
We look forward to continuing our journey through the “Let’s Explore Together” project and welcoming families to future activities.
We are delighted to announce the successful completion of the Maple Park Project, a community initiative delivered by Ipswich Romanian Community in partnership with local organisations, schools, authorities and residents to promote a cleaner, safer and more inclusive neighbourhood.
Over the course of the project, we worked closely with local communities to raise awareness of antisocial behaviour (ASB), littering, fly-tipping, and the growing issue of sunflower seed husks being discarded in public spaces. Our aim was not only to educate but also to encourage positive community engagement and long-term behavioural change.
Throughout the project, we successfully delivered a wide range of activities, including:
Creative workshops for children, young people and families, using art as a tool to promote environmental responsibility and community pride.
Close collaboration with local schools, helping pupils explore important community topics through creative learning.
Partnership working with local authorities, police, community organisations and other stakeholders to strengthen community engagement and promote positive action.
Dedicated ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) sessions for Romanian speakers, designed to improve confidence in English while introducing practical topics such as community responsibility, litter prevention and antisocial behaviour awareness.
A social media awareness campaign encouraging residents to keep Ipswich clean and highlighting the importance of respecting shared public spaces.
Community interviews with local residents, police officers, local councillors and members of the Romanian community, discussing challenges, solutions and positive examples of community collaboration.
These interviews are now available on our YouTube channel, where everyone can learn more about the project and the collective efforts made to improve Maple Park and the surrounding area.

Although this project has now come to a successful conclusion, its legacy will continue through our future community activities and TEF – The Educational Festival, where environmental awareness, inclusion and community engagement will remain key themes.

Ipswich May Day Festival - 2026
On 3rd May 2026, our community came together at the Ipswich May Day Festival to honour 100 years since the General Strike — a historic moment when 1.7 million workers stood united against wage cuts and in support of better conditions for 1.2 million miners.
We marched from the town centre to Alexandra Park in solidarity with the trade unions that continue to defend workers’ rights today. The atmosphere was powerful, hopeful, and rooted in the same spirit of unity that shaped the events of 1926.
After the march, everyone enjoyed a family‑friendly afternoon and evening filled with live music, food, stalls, rides, games, and a vibrant community spirit. Entry was free, making the celebration open and welcoming to all.
We were honoured to take part and to stand together for fairness, solidarity, and the strength of our community.

Our community came together for an inspiring art workshop celebrating the iconic places of Ipswich and the personal stories connected to them. Guided by artist Romeo Mustață, participants enjoyed a creative journey that began with map‑making and continued with expressive charcoal drawing.

All artworks created during the session are now part of the exhibition at The Hold, showcased during June–July 2026, highlighting the creativity and stories of our local community.

A new Romanian‑language stop‑smoking support group successfully took place in Ipswich, offering a safe, non‑judgmental space for anyone ready to quit smoking. The free 6‑week program was guided by a specialist stop‑smoking consultant and brought together participants who wanted to make a positive change in their lives.
Throughout the program, attendees received step‑by‑step guidance, access to nicotine‑replacement products — including e‑cigarettes, patches, gum and more — and the opportunity to connect with others on the same journey. Together, they explored the reasons behind smoking habits, learned about nicotine addiction, practiced coping strategies, and built confidence to prevent relapse.

Ipswich Romanian Community
Empowering our community through education, opportunity, and inclusion.
Our Let’s Christmas Together celebration returned once again in December 2025, marking the fourth consecutive year of bringing joy, connection, and community spirit to the holiday season.
This past edition was a heartwarming success. Together, we managed to spread joy to families in need and brighten the holidays for children who needed support the most. Thanks to the generosity and involvement of our community, the 2025 event became one of our most impactful and memorable celebrations so far.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed — whether by donating, volunteering, or simply showing up with kindness and enthusiasm. Your support truly made a difference and helped transform the season into a moment of hope and warmth for many.
19 December 2025
Today marks the end of an important chapter in the journey of Ipswich Romanian Community.
After more than four years of delivering free, volunteer-led English classes every Friday since November 2021, we have made the difficult decision to bring these sessions to a close. This decision was not an easy one and comes following the closure of The Hive, the wonderful community space that became our home throughout these years.
From the very beginning, our English classes were entirely unfunded and made possible through the dedication of volunteers who generously gave their time each week to support Romanian speakers in building confidence, improving their English language skills, and becoming more connected with the local community.
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been part of this incredible journey.
Thank you to:
Every student who attended our classes with enthusiasm and determination.
Every volunteer who gave their time, knowledge, and kindness.
Every sponsor and donor who supported our wider community work.
Every partner organisation that believed in our mission and helped us create opportunities for others.
The Hive, for welcoming us and providing a safe and inclusive space where our community could learn, grow, and build lasting friendships.
Over the past four years, these Friday sessions became much more than English lessons. They created friendships, increased confidence, encouraged integration, and helped many people take their first steps towards employment, education, volunteering, and active participation in community life.
Although this chapter has come to an end, our journey certainly has not.
Ipswich Romanian Community remains committed to supporting our community through new projects, educational initiatives, cultural events, creative workshops, and future opportunities that continue to promote inclusion, learning, and wellbeing.
This is not goodbye. It is simply the beginning of a new chapter.
From all of us at Ipswich Romanian Community, thank you for being part of this remarkable journey. We look forward to creating many more opportunities together in the years ahead.
On 1st December 2025, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM, at Ipswich County Library (Northgate St, IP1 3DE), we came together to celebrate Romania’s National Day.
