Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible to participate?

Any student between the age of 11 and 19 who has played their instrument for one or more years in a concert band, symphony orchestra, and/or string orchestra.

If I graduate high school in June 2020, am I still eligible to participate?

Yes! Anyone between the age of 11 and 19 in June 2020 who has played their instrument for one or more years in an ensemble is eligible to participate.

Do I need to be a student at an international school in order to participate?

No. Anyone between the age of 11 and 19 in June 2020 who has played their instrument for one or more years in a ensemble is eligible to participate.

Do participants need to stay the full week?

Yes. The activities and rehearsals connect throughout the week. Therefore it is an expectation that everybody is present for all organized activities.

What happens if the participant is placed in the wrong ensemble?

Throughout the event, we will organize full ensemble rehearsals and sectionals. This will help the conductors ensure that students are put in the right ensemble. Therefore, students may be moved to another group early on in the week in order to make sure that they are well prepared for the Gala Concert.

Are parents and teachers welcome to join?

Parents and teachers are welcome to join at their own expense and organization (upon request, hotel bookings can be made through our event).

Upon early notice, we can include you in the dinners and activities.

Although no events and tasks are given to parents and teachers, we may ask you for voluntary logistical, instrumental, and sectional help at the event.

We encourage everybody to come to the Gala Concert.

What travel arrangements need to be made?

Participants need to organize their own trip to Ålesund, Norway. From the airport all arrangements will be made.

Do I need a visa to come to Norway?

Visa requirements are dependent on your travel documentation/country of origin/country of the passport. To check specific requirements, see the travel website.

May we stay in another hotel?

It is strongly advised that all participants stay at the same hotel. Evening activities and rehearsals will take place here as well. Own arrangements can be made, with the realization that there will be no supervision (and therefore no accountability) outside of rehearsal and activity times.

The summer band and orchestra camp is also about team building and participation, therefore it is also suggested to be at the same hotel in order to be present for the group breakfast.

How much will it cost?

Traveling participants: 2400EUR

Local participants: 2000EUR

These fees include all meals, travel, location rentals, activities, and leadership from professional music educators.

There are opportunities for discounts, and possible sponsorship. See "Registration & Fees" for more information.

Can we get a refund if we suddenly cannot come?

No refunds will be given after the set dates for the specific event. See "Before the Event" for these dates.

Is there financial aid for camp participation?

If you have a student musician who would like to participate in 2020 International Summer Band and Orchestra Camp NORWAY, but you have a difficulty meeting the costs, please contact us at internationalschoolbandcamp@gmail.com

Is technology allowed on the trip?

Students may bring technological devices (phones, laptops, etc). However, these may not be used during rehearsal times. Students are also responsible for their own device. Families are responsible for the cost of phone and/or data usage.

In case of an emergency, adults will be present with phones in case family members need to be contacted.
