Hasselt International Folklore Festival

On a yearly basis, the Belgian folk dance group 'De Boezeroenen' stages its International Folklore Festival in August. Folk dance groups from all over the world participate in this event, located in Hasselt, Belgium. This year, the festival is up to its 34th edition.

The concept of the Hasselt International Folklore Festival is not a folk dance competition. Rather, it is a sociable event, where nonprofessional but nonetheless highly accomplished folk dance groups perform. The festival’s goal is to initiate its spectators in the richness of worldwide cultural diversity in displaying traditional folk dance on stage. A second intention is to unite people from all over the world in dance and music in a friendly atmosphere.

Folk dance group 'De Boezeroenen'

Folk dance group 'De Boezeroenen' was established in 1976 in Kuringen-Hasselt, a town in Flanders, the northern (Dutch-speaking) part of Belgium. The group’s objective is to carry out and maintain Flanders’s traditional folk art. In its entirety, the group counts approximately 100 members between 4 and 70 years old, divided into different groups, according to age.

The group presents a varied program of traditional dances and live music. The program is inspired by several aspects of daily life in traditional Flanders. The dancers wear different costumes, according to the different sorts of dances.

'De Boezeroenen' perform in Belgium and abroad. They have danced on festivals in Bulgaria, Belarus, Denmark, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and the Ukraine.
