This massive crackdown was carried out in response to growing concerns about the platform's exploitation for illegal and fraudulent activities.

According to media reports, this move by WhatsApp's parent company, Meta, follows numerous complaints from users and regulatory scrutiny regarding the platform’s misuse. The company aims to ensure the security and integrity of the messaging service by preventing scams, spam, and other malicious activities.
In August 2024, WhatsApp received complaints from 10,707 users in India regarding various issues, including fraud, spam, impersonation, and other forms of abuse. Reports suggest that the company took immediate action on 93% of these complaints to ensure the safety of users. This led to the closure of approximately 8.45 million accounts between August 1 and August 31.
Why Were These Accounts Banned?
WhatsApp has cited multiple reasons for these account bans, primarily focusing on the following concerns:
Fraudulent Activities: A significant portion of the accounts was found engaging in scams, phishing, and impersonation, which posed risks to users.
Spam and Bulk Messaging: Many accounts were involved in sending automated bulk messages, which violates WhatsApp's policies.
Violation of WhatsApp’s Terms of Service: Accounts found spreading misinformation, hate speech, or engaging in illegal activities were also shut down.
Suspicious Behavior: Some accounts were flagged due to unusual activity patterns that indicated possible abuse of the platform.
WhatsApp stated that of the total accounts blocked, 1.66 million were immediately disabled due to serious violations, while the remaining accounts were investigated and subsequently blocked after being declared suspicious.
