Understanding the ecology, evolution and conservation of tropical rock outcrop biodiversity
IBL is a research group dedicated to understanding the origins, maintenance and conservation of biodiversity associated with tropical rock outcrops, particularly inselbergs — Earth's ancient island-like ecosystems, which harbor unique biological communities and remarkable levels of endemism.
Our research integrates ecology, evolutionary biology, plant systematics, conservation science and biodiversity informatics to investigate how species evolve, interact and persist in these naturally fragmented landscapes. We are particularly interested in the processes that generate biodiversity, the impacts of global environmental change, and the development of innovative approaches for conservation.
Beyond academic research, we actively seek to connect science with society through open data initiatives, international collaborations, conservation partnerships, science communication and innovative models that promote the protection of threatened species and ecosystems.
Based at Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil and connected to a global network of collaborators, our lab brings together students, researchers and partners working to advance knowledge and conservation of tropical biodiversity.
