The Inselberg Biodiversity Lab (IBL) is led by Dr. Luiza F.A. de Paula, a Brazilian botanist whose research focuses on the ecology, evolution and conservation of tropical rock outcrop ecosystems. Based at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), the lab brings together students, researchers and collaborators interested in understanding the extraordinary biodiversity associated with inselbergs and other naturally fragmented landscapes.
Our work spans multiple disciplines, including plant ecology, evolutionary biology, systematics, biogeography, conservation science and biodiversity informatics. By integrating field observations, laboratory analyses, large-scale biodiversity data and collaborative conservation initiatives, we seek to better understand how species originate, adapt and persist in some of the world's most unique environments.
A central goal of the lab is to bridge fundamental and applied research. In addition to generating scientific knowledge, we develop tools, databases and partnerships that contribute to biodiversity conservation, environmental education and public engagement. We believe that addressing contemporary conservation challenges requires collaboration among scientists, local communities, conservation practitioners, policymakers and innovative sectors of society.
Through national and international collaborations, our lab contributes to research and conservation initiatives across Brazil and other regions of the world, including Africa (e.g. Ivory Coast), Australia, United States, Europe (e.g. Belgium, Germany, Spain) and India. We are particularly committed to advancing knowledge that supports the conservation of threatened species and the long-term protection of tropical rock outcrop ecosystems.
We welcome students, researchers and partners who share our passion for biodiversity, scientific discovery and conservation!
