Functional Shoulder Mobility
(Frohm, Heijne, Kowalski, Svensson, & Myklebust, November 2010)
Purpose: Assess bilateral shoulder functional range of motion. It requires normal shoulder mobility, scapular mobility and thoracic spine extension. Start: Measure the length distance between the wrist to the tip of the third digit as a reference for measuring your results.
Instructions:
Stand with feet shoulder width apart.
Movement: Make a fist with each hand, placing the thumbs inside the fists and placing them as close as possible together behind the back. The tester measures the distance between the two fists. Use the measured length of your hand, as described above, as the tool to score your results.
Repeat with arms in opposite position. Score both positions individually.
Criteria/Scoring:
3 points: Less than one hand length between the fists
2 points: Less than one and a half hand length between the fists
1 point: One and a half hand length or more between the fists.
