PrOJECT 2: Technology Access and Connections Systems

Questionnaire due by workshop 3; QuickWrite due one week after workshop 3

Third ed. textbook chapters 5–7

Goal: Study the state of technology in the library you are studying and how that technology is being used not only for patrons visiting the library in person but also the connections it is making to the wide world of information and resources across the globe.

Product: A QuickWrite to be completed after data gathering in your library, filling out the questionnaire, and doing the collaborative analysis in Workshop 3. This QuickWrite should cover not only the state of technology but how it is used for connections development.

Part 1:

Do an investigation of the state of technology in the library you are studying and fill in the following questionnaire before workshop 3. Come prepared to discuss your answers at workshop 3.

Part 2:

Investigate the types of connections made via technology by your library. For example:

  • How does the library make connections to museums, art galleries, helpful education sites, links to community resources, participation in consortia for digital sharing, etc.?
  • How does the library make patrons aware of these connections?
  • What has changed if your library is physically closed during the pandemic?

Product for Presentation 2: A summary of your library vs. other libraries of your type and of all types of libraries

QuickWrite due to Canvas (one week after Workshop 3):

One page, single space, 12 pt font. Answer the following questions:

  • Write a brief description of the state of technology in your library.
  • Write a short paragraph about connections development in your library.
  • What is the state of technology in the library that I studied?
  • How does this compare with other libraries of my type studied by class members?
  • How does this compare across types of libraries studied in class?
  • Note: be sure to include both the technology and connections program by your library in your QuickWrite.
  • Considering the state of technology in all the libraries studied: so what?

We will all be sharing and building collaborative intelligence during our workshop. It would help if, for your additional reading assignment, that you read one or several articles from the literature on the current and future state of technology in libraries.
