Tips and Advice

  • Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. The more sites you contact, the better chance you have of securing one.

  • Do not procrastinate. Start your research early and begin contacting firms as soon as possible.

  • Don’t get discouraged. You may get turned down or they may not be interested in an intern this summer. Keep trying and stay positive.

Contacting firms

Once you’ve accumulated a list of a few firms that interest you, it is time to start sending emails and making phone calls. When contacting potential practicum sites, make sure you have your resume and cover letters ready. That is likely one of the first things a firm will ask for. Utilize your mentor’s knowledge and ask them to help you review and edit them.

Tips and Advice

Research the company - They may ask questions like “Why are you interested in our firm?” or “What do you know about our firm or design work?”

Contact the right people - Find out who you should be contacting for the internship (designer, owner, HR department, etc.)

Have examples of your work ready - Firms may ask to see some projects you have done.

Interviews

Always come prepared for an interview. Research the firm ahead of time, bring your resume and portfolio (if necessary), questions for the interviewer, and pen and paper to take notes. Be sure to take a copy of your resume and the GSU internship requirements with you to leave with the firm. You should hear back from the firm within 7 to 10 days after the interview, but this can vary. A handwritten note, or email, should be sent in a timely manner to restate how much you are interested.

Tips and Advice

Be on time - Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early. Drive to the interview site a day before to gauge traffic and locate parking.

Make eye contact - Your body language says a lot about you. Sit tall and stay attentive.

Always ask questions - It shows interest and eagerness in joining their firm.

Thank your interviewer - A handwritten thank you note will receive more attention than an email, but either will do.
