The directorial debut of pioneering independent filmmaker John Cassavetes explored racial relations during the Beat Generation years in New York City. Featuring Ben Carruthers, Lelia Goldoni, Hugh Hurd and mostly nonprofessional cast and crew, the film was shot on location in Manhatten and was initially based on improvisation. The passion, the love, the music, the art, the tensions and struggles, all of which the three African American siblings observed and experienced in 50s New York City, were well captured in this 82-minute work of art.
