Ross is, as I mentioned in my setting and story subpage, the primary heavyman for Ragnatela. He is 23 years old, being the oldest of the five suitors. He spends most of his time on the streets, directing the hundreds of hitmen, gang members, and goons that act under the State.
His mother is one of the founders, alongside Romeo's dad, and once acted in the same position as Ross, being the leader of the street men; she is now the official bodyguard/companion of the Ragnatela's crimelord (in a purely platonic sense, of course). She is known as "The Spider" (her real name is Araya), not only because of her sinister and violent nature but also because of her situation concerning Ross' conception and birth. Ross' father, who is unnamed in the game, was a sort of partner in crime to his mother; however, they had a sort of love-hate relationship while they worked together, and while neither of them would consider themselves romantically involved, the love part of the love-hate relationship certainly would get "heated" at times. Long story short, Ross' mother soon became pregnant, and during her pregnancy, the hate part of the love-hate relationship perhaps got a bit too much one day, and she shot and killed Ross' father after an off-handed comment. This is part of where her nickname came from, as, like a black widow spider, she has so far killed all of her lovers. Needless to say, Ross' mother was demoted shortly after Ross' birth from this position, and was placed as the bulldog of the State's more feeble leader, and was only placed back on the streets for one-off, important jobs that the kingpin couldn't trust anyone else with.
Ross' childhood was, of course, chaotic. As I mentioned in my moodboard subpage, Ross is transgender, and so he was obviously born a girl. This didn't stop him from being a spitfire in his childhood; he grew up only half knowing his mother and spent most of his days roaming the safehouses alone, playing with bits of metal, discarded guns, and spray bottles. As soon as he was old enough to have a shred of common sense, he was off roaming the streets, getting into fights, and using his mother's name and fame to get away with whatever he wanted. Growing up, he always found Romeo nothing but an annoyance; his mother wanted them to get along, but Ross saw him as more like an obnoxious child than a younger brother. It was all going peachy until he was 13—hormones raging, aggressive, and cocky—and he was messing around in some other State's territory, unbeknownst to the fact that this State had a long-term rivalry with Ragnatela. He was caught, put in his place, and reprimanded by his mother. As punishment, he was banned from leaving the safehouse and placed as a runner for a year until he learned discipline and the value of the State. He was never the same afterwards, learning modesty and gaining a new perspective on their cruel world. During this time, he also realised how he truly felt gender-wise and came out as a trans man. To prevent him from messing around in the future, he was given roles and responsibilities and slowly built himself up to fill his mother's shoes. By the time he was an adult, he had come into his own as a fighter, a leader, and a man.
As I discussed in my setting and story subpage, in order to woo your chosen suitor, you use complete missions, which come in the style of retro arcade minigames. Ross' missions come in the style of street fighter games, such as Street Fighter, Mortal Combat, or Fatal Fury—you must beat enemies with combo attacks in order to woo Ross. The more enemies you defeat, the more points you get, and the quicker you can take Ross on a date.
As I have mentioned, each character gets two intimate dates and two endings. The first date is always the same: for Ross, he takes you on a motorcycle ride out of the city and follows a river into the countryside. You both sit next to the riverbank and share a cigarette. He says he likes to come out here to clear his head and tells you a bit more about himself, revealing more of his backstory—he tells you about his mother and how he's always been afraid of her and worries that he won't be able to fill her shoes. He talks about how he has secretly always been fond of Romeo, as a younger brother-type figure, but never shows it.
The second date is where it splits the endings. Ross tells you that there is a secret mission he must go on, and he needs someone he can trust to help him. You go with him and end up in a standoff, and it is revealed that Noah has been secretly relaying messages to the Goats (who are the Ragnatela's rival state) this whole time. This is where the two endings split: the gang members threaten to kill you, and Ross will either be extremely concerned and protective or dismissive and calm, depending on how much you mean to him. If he's dismissive, the gang takes it as a sign that he is weak and kills him. This triggers the bad ending, where Ross dies and you are cast out of the State as punishment. If he is protective, the gang members attempt to shoot you, but Ross pushes you out of the way just in time and gets himself shot in the side. Noah, still empathetic to his friend, convinces the gang to flee under the threat that Ross' mother will be furious, and Ross confesses his love to you while he bleeds out. Luckily, Romeo finds you both in time and gets you back before Ross dies. This is (surprising as it may seem) the good ending, and it ends with you and Ross permanently becoming a couple.
Although this would be entirely implausible in an actual video game due to copyright reasons, I think it would be fun to say that each character gets their own personalised song to play during the credits, after you unlock their good ending. I will be using existing songs as examples/placeholders, however, if I were to actually make this game, I would probably use the given songs as inspiration and create 8-bit tracks in the same musical style.
If you get Ross' good ending, the song "Civil War" by The Cage will play in the credits. This is a nu metal/punk song that I think really fits with Ross' self-destructive nature as well as his grunge aesthetic.
The first thing I always do with characters is get them out of my head and down onto a page (or screen, in most cases). So, taking inspiration from the moodboard, I did some initial sketches of what I think Ross should look like.
The majority of the themes I associate with Ross came through in these sketches; he is, of course, the oldest of the five suitors, and so I would like to give him at least a little bit of facial hair to allude to this. I think that having leather in his design is a given (one of my peers who has a motorcycle says it's supposed to help with sticking to the seat, hence why bikers wear so much leather), and I really like the idea of him having his shirt open, as it shows his top surgery scars (which are the scars you get after gender affirming surgery) along with his abs.
I want to really get his shape language and theme colour across with these concepts: his torso, face, and hair are all going to be square to indicate his strength and stability. The colour I landed on based on his moodboard was grey, as it is more in line with his grunge fashion sense and makes him seem more mature and masculine.
After figuring out shape language and initial concepts, I wanted to try and get some outfits down and decide which one I liked best—in fact, for Ross specifically, I went above and beyond and looked at making another moodboard specifically for his clothing (see below). I wanted the clothes to complement the shape of this figure, so square-shaped jackets and wide-legged trousers are a must.
To the left are the three outfits I came up with: the first one is what I initially imagined him to wear, the second one is a bit more laid-back and hip, and the third is more based on real-life bike outfits. I personally like all of them equally, and so I turned to my peers for help, asking around for opinions (my peers tend to be my target audience anyway, so it's good to get input from them on the elements of this game I'm unsure about). People didn't seem to like the open-shirt idea as much as I did; however, the general consensus seemed to be that a leather jacket with camo trousers is a good shout. One of my peers said that the camo adds a flash of colour to the grey design. In conclusion, I will probably make his design some kind of mixture of all three: camo trousers, muscle tees, and the jacket in the third design.
Now that I have figured out the outfit more concretely, it is time for the hair. I drew this really cool sketch of Ross' face (I love the nose and face shape; I think it really gets the squareness across) and mocked up some different hair styles. The first one is the hair depicted in all previous sketches; it's nice, but it makes his head shape a little too triangular and just kind of looks a bit basic. The second one is, of course, a buzz cut; I actually think this fits the best out of the three hairstyles with Ross' personality and role in the story and lends itself much more to the "biker" persona. However, I really think that the mullet (third along) takes the cake; as soon as I drew it, I was in love. The texture, the shape—it lends itself much more to the square shape language, and it just looks so darn cool. I also think it makes him look younger and more distinctive. I didn't even ask any of my peers for their opinions, as I was so sure that Ross was meant for a mullet. I will definitely be using the third hairstyle for his final design.
So that I don't have to explain my entire process of creating this character reference sheet, I recorded my screen during its entire creation, so you can see exactly how I did it. In all, the process took about 2 hours.
You can see in the video that when drawing, I tend to go back and forth, and even this late into the process, I am making decisions. For example, you can see where I changed my mind about his trousers and shoes, as I thought it interfered too much with his shape language. You can also see me realising after drawing the lineart for the side profile that I hadn't sampled the colours, so I go back and sample them. I think it's cool that despite his theme colour being grey, there are very few actual grey parts of his design; it's all desaturated brown or green. The combinations of the colours, however, make the overall palette seem grey.
