Related services personnel (RSP) are essential team members who contribute to creating and sustaining effectiv educational environments. RSP serve as members of collaborative problem solving teams at both the district and building levels, working to remove access barriers, a crucial component to a supportive school culture. They support students with disabilities through system-level initiatives and programs that promote meaningful participation in both curricular and extracurricular activities for all students.
In addition to providing district and building level support, RSP also provide services to students through Response to Intervention (RtI), a 504 Plan, and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). These services should promote participation through the use of evidence-based interventions and High Leverage Practices provided in a contextually-relevant setting. The delivery of related services is a dynamic process that requires a variety of considerations through collaboration with the school teams. To meet the tenets of IDEA and deliver a free and appropriate public education program (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE), IEP teams should consider the following:
goals and objectives supported by the related service (academic, functional);
service delivery method (to the student, on behalf of the student);
treatment setting (classroom, therapy room, job site, and other school environments);
format (individual, small group, classroom);
intensity (the amount of time spent in each treatment session);
frequency (the number of treatment sessions over a set period of time); and
duration (the length of treatment received).
