Spoiler: Mind control is no longer something that is confined to sci-fi books and movies; it's real and it's revolutionizing how we interact with things around us!
This technology is called Brain-Computer Interfaces and allows us to interpret the electrical signals from our brain to communicate with other devices such as a computer or prosthetic limbs. Over the last 5 months, I've been learning about the potential of BCIs and building a project that lets me control my computer using my mind - including playing the Chrome Dino game by blinking!
You might have heard of this technology being used by companies like Neuralink (Elon Musk’s Company) , Blackrock Neurotech, Forrest Neurotech, or Calgary's own Possibility Neurotech, but these companies showcase only a few of the many types of BCIs that exist. Invasive and semi-invasive BCIs require surgical implantation near the brain, while non-invasive types, like the one I used, collect data externally without surgery.
What's crazy about this is that anyone can do it! The FAB Lab recently got its new addition of the MUSE headband, which has EEG electrodes I used to collect my brainwave signals and interpret them on my computer. Although I used this for a simple game, BCIs are helping individuals all around the world with disabilities and neurodegenerative diseases take control of their lives and gain independence.
I've included my learnings of BCIs along with a step-by-step article and video on how this incredible technology works.
