We make custom-made mechanical parts, devices or test specimens for the researchers and students of IMR and Tohoku university.

Ordering flow

Step 1. Consult with the staff by any of the following two ways

1. 1. In-parson  or online meeting  :  Please make an appointment via the meeting request form.

   2. Email :  Send the drawings, specs or the details of your request to imr.machineshop@grp.tohoku.ac.jp.

Step 2. Make the work order

• After consulting with the staff, please fill out and submit the work order site

• We'll give you "Consultation ID" when you consult with us. Please fill in the "Consultation ID" in the  work order form.

• If you have sample materials, mechanical parts, etc to provide us with, please leave them on this table.

Step 3. Pick up the finished products

We'll let you know by email or otherwise when your order is done. Please come to the pick-up site to receive the finished products. Roughly speaking, it takes about a month until your order is finished. Please read FAQ when you need make an urgent request.

We are skilled at

•  Designing and drafting mechanical parts and devices using 2D/3D CAD system

• Machining using lathes, milling machines, drill presses and shapers

• Planer surface grinding

• Wire-EDM and sinker-EDM

• Laser cutting (only plastics and resins)

• 3D Printing

• TIG, stick, oxy-acetylene and resistance welding

• Soldering and silver soldering

• Hot/cold forging and rolling

• Wire drawing

• Press forming (Pro. Chiba's permission is needed)

• Anchoring gas-cylinder stands and furniture 

Besides the main machine shop, there's also a machine shop where researchers and student can use machine tools by themselves.

How to use the shop (for those who are already registered)

• Please make reservations on the booking site before you visit the researcher and student machne shop.

• Those who are not registered to the researcher and student machine shop membership are not allowed to enter the room on safety grounds.

• Those who need raw materials should make request  for raw materials is can be made on Raw Material Request form.

• Users who need instruction with machining should consult with machine shop staff  via e-mail or the meeting request form in advance.

• It's up to you whether or not you wear masks as an anti-infection measure in the shop. However we suggest taking basic anti-infection measures for yourself and others.

• After using safety glasses and safety-toe shoes, please put them in the boxes . Please don't put them back to the places where they were.

• Please read "Shop safety handout" closely and follow the safety rules.

• Please read IMR's rule book closely and follow the rules not to get infected and not to get people infected.

• Those who are not IMR's members should register here before you visit our shop.

How to register to the IMR student machine shop

Visit the registration site. Take online safety lectures and confirm safety rules. Then submit Shop Agreement form. The  registration site requires you to log in with your gmail account of Tohoku University. 

The student shop is equipped with

• Four lathes

• Two vertical milling machines

• One shaper

• Four drill presses

• Two abrasive cut-off machines

• Two pedestal grinders

• One diamond band saw

• Two flat lap machines

The following site will tell you the status of the requests you have made. The site is only accessible from inside the IMR's local network.

You need the ID and password of the lab you belong to. Contact us if you don't know them.

In case that nothing appears when you visit the URL above , it's highly likely that you improperly set up proxy for your PC.

You should use the set-up script "http://proxy.imr.tohoku.ac/proxy.pac" instead of setting proxy manually.

Here's the example proxy setting for Windows10.

Please send an email to imr.machineshop@grp.tohoku.ac.jp  and tell us the following.

1. The type of the material such as SUS304 (stainless steel), A2017 (duralumin), C1100 (Tough pitch copper), etc...

2. Rods or plates.

3. Size, for example, 50mm in diameter and 200mm long for rods, 10mm by 200mm by 300mm for plates.

4. Number of pieces.

If what you requested is in our stock, we'll give you consultation ID.
