The Quarter Reich

The audio content of 'The Quarter Reich', our most popular episode

Our first Episode, the Quarter Reich, explores an alternate World War Two, where the United States of America and Union of Socialist Soviet Republics never enter the War, but Portugal enters on the side of the allies and fascist Spain enters on the side of the Axis. Germany becomes a dominant European power. Switzerland is the only neutral nation in continental Europe to survive, and no allied nation lives save Ireland only. The United Kingdom's and France's colonies become part of the Axis Powers, and the UK is dissolved. Nazi Germany annexes England and make Cornwall, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland puppet states.

Of course, the United States is not happy, but has gone through her own crisis as well. Sticking with precedent, popular president Franklin Delano Roosevelt retires after two terms in political office. Henry A. Wallace was elected President in 1940, and was inaugurated on January 20th, 1941. Wallace was elected on a promise to save Britain and France, but never got into the war. He failed to do so, and this cost him his re-election to John Nance Garner.

The Garner administration would not take Nazi domination in Europe and Axis domination globally for an answer. Garner sponsored Coup d'Etats in the formerly British governments, and united them with Ireland into Greater Britannica. The United States also began to develop nuclear weapons with the assistance of a German refugee, Albert Einstein. The stage was set for a second round, where Communism and Capitalism would come together to defeat the Nazi threat.

World Map, 2020

This map shows how the world has changed and stayed the same. Siberia is independent, for example, and Japan is split like Korea is. The United States annexed Northern Mexico after World War Three, and Russia remains a Socialist country. Other features, such as the Scandinavian Union, are also highlighted

1940: Wallace v. Garner

This is a map of the 1940 final election. An amendment was rushed through Congress and the states that sent the vote back to the electoral college, with only the top three candidates on the ticket. If the electoral college still failed to produce a majority, they would re-vote with only the top two candidates. The Democrat Party was split into three faction, and this shows the New Deal (Wallace, IA) and Federalist (Garner, TX) factions. The North-South divide was very apparent. It was also the only election between 1860 and 2020 where the Republican Party did not have a candidate in the final election.
