Sharin F. Ali is a biracial poet and multimedia artist residing in Surrey B.C. Her work is influenced by her upbringing and experiences growing up as a biracial woman in the Indo-Fijian diaspora. 

Artist Statement

‘Satchel of Sustenance’ is a poem about living with the impacts of colonialism during the rule British Empire in India. There have been studies done that link traumatic events that lead to health conditions throughout a lineage. I am Indo-Fijian and a descendant of indentured labourers. I have been diagnosed with a hormonal disorder called  Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and believe that it is directly linked to the mistreatment of my ancestors. I am at risk for diabetes, heart disease and high cholesterol which are all things that have been linked to the impacts of colonialism. 

‘Intergenerational Tree’ is a found poem and a collage about my ancestors having a dialogue with me and reminding me that I am not alone while working through intergenerational trauma we suffered through our bloodline. It reminds me that the work I am doing is important and that our suffering does not go unnoticed. 

Reflection and Connection to "Imagination for Liberation"

‘Satchel of Sustenance’ speaks to accepting ones body from the aftermath of colonialism.  It is acknowledging the challenges a linage has faced and accepting and loving everything our ancestors did for us thus liberating us from colonialism.

‘Intergenerational Tree’ feels like becoming liberated from the inherited traumas of our ancestors and being reminded they are still with us and are proud that we do not forget them. We do the work and remind the world of what they once faced.
