Imagination for Liberation

Angel (she/her) is a visual artist and singer, originally from Hong Kong, currently living in Vancouver, BC (traditional, ancestral and unceded lands of Coast Salish People). She enjoys exploring new places, travelling and hiking. Angel’s journey as an artist began three years ago - this has been a healing and rejuvenating practice. “I no longer isolate myself. Painting and singing open my heart”, she says.

Artist Statement

Heart to Heart is a visual exploration of places and challenges that we need to navigate on our journey to become liberated. The colours in the painting vividly depict painful emotions (black), nature: forest and trees (green); sky and ocean (blue), climate disasters (dark maroon), political crises (dark purple) and happiness (sunset orange). The subject in the middle is my message: Heart to heart - We should nurture love for each other to overcome divisions and infighting, violence and destruction. We are all connected in our abilities to feel and emote our human experience.

Reflection and Connection to "Imagination for Liberation"

War causes oppression, destroying the globe for generations. I used my imagination to create this painting to highlight the power of love and nature to confront the creeping powers of destruction and trauma. The ability to connect and live in harmony with each other can release the stress, confusion and shadow of the past, so that we can imagine happiness for the entire world.
