About the Art Show
Various hierarchical systems of violence - including colonialism, capitalism, systemic racism, caste system, white supremacy - have impacted the globe for generations, and to this day we witness these systems unfold in our societies, continuing to exploit and extract, continuing to inflict and perpetuate destruction and oppression towards many communities from the Global Majority.
We witness this across Turtle Island, to Haiti, to Palestine, to Congo, to South Asia, to Australia, to Philippines, to Hawai’i, to Sudan, and more.
To see the transformation, liberation, and change we so rightly deserve, it will require the continual collective efforts and actions from a multitude of peoples and communities. It will require building upon what many have already done before us - what many are doing now - building upon their fight, actions, creation, sacrifice, and more.
But it will also require us to create something new, it will require us to imagine, to use our Imagination for Liberation.
The central philosophy of the show is not a new idea, it is informed and inspired by many fighters for freedom, educators, abolitionists, leaders, artists, scholars, writers, activists, and community members.
Many of whom who have used their own imaginations to create change in their own way that has led to transforming and impacting our world and humanity for the better.
Imagination for Liberation is grounded in their collective wisdoms and actions, and on the understanding that we are all born with abundant imagination.
More so, we are aware that once we nourish our imaginations, our personal and collective imaginations, we can all potentially find and build diverse, creative, unique, tangible pathways/methods/actions towards liberation. It can empower us to understand what our unique part is in the collective efforts towards change.
With the open call, we hoped to share space for various reflections: how we can use our imagination to find ways to dismantle the hierarchical systems of violence, and what does that look like? What does liberation look like?
What are the futures/worlds we hope for, want and need?
How do we get to these futures/worlds - meaning how can we use, nourish, and expand our imagination to build towards better futures/worlds for humanity and what are the methods, actions, tools, ways that will potentially allow for us to get there?
With this community-oriented show, each participating artist has harnessed their imagination as a vessel to express a multitude of these reflections with their personal perspectives, creating various unique modes/pathways of resistances. We are so honoured to be able to co-collaborate this space together with so many amazing local creative community members and be able to witness and experience their powerful intentions and actions.
We hope that as you come and take in (or bring to) the space, you feel the nourishment of your own imagination, but even more so, we hope that you can take your time with these artistic imaginations and feel inspired to reflect on your own creative potentials and find pathways of envisioning new worlds and building resistance.
