Imaginary Expedition is a Toronto-based duo of Victoria Dobbs and Glyph Greenleaf who combine folk songwriting with early music composition techniques and intimate, unamplified performance practice. The ensemble draws people closer, quietly pushing the limits of what can be achieved with only their alto and baritone voices and a classical guitar. Their songs alternate between the lead vocalists, and gravitate toward duets with equal importance on both vocal lines.
The name Imaginary Expedition reflects the experience the duo creates. Their songs spark daydreams and send listeners on journeys through memory, grief, gratitude, and self-reflection. Their lyrics journey through emotional terrain shaped by the vivid changing seasons of the North, with imagery drawn from great lakes, old-growth forests, open prairies, wetlands, shield rock, and luminous skies.
Victoria and Glyph began writing together in August 2024 and performing together regularly in September 2025, after years of separate professional music careers. The duo has developed their live show and generated momentum through intimate listening rooms, festival stages, house concerts, and industry showcases. The duo has appeared at JP Music Festival in Boston (2025), and Toronto’s Winterfolk Blues + Roots Festival and Toronto Folk Festival (2026).
Their debut singles “Winter Lullaby” and “The Ones Who Are Gone” capture the acoustic realism of sitting in a room with the performers, whose voices move in harmony and counterpoint with Glyph’s lap-style classical guitar. The songs, which explore how we carry the memories of those we have lost, have received airplay on folk and indie radio in Canada, the USA, and Australia. With the support of a FACTOR Artist Development grant the duo has begun production of a full-length album in the same live-off-the-floor format.

Victoria Dobbs was living in her seventh co-living experiment, helping manage a dilapidated Victorian mansion overflowing with artists and creative chaos. In this deeply communal and relentlessly eventful life, the dream to build a future as a songwriter with a then-imaginary collaborator felt further away than ever. Having spent years singing in cover bands and tribute acts, Victoria was still trying to develop an original musical voice.
One evening, the sound of classical guitar drifting from a roommate’s gathering inspired Victoria to find the source. On the back steps, noodling casually among early arrivals on Victoria’s own house guitar, sat Glyph Greenleaf.
Glyph brought musical depth, as a recent New England Conservatory graduate with mastery of classical piano, composition, and improvisation, and passions for early music, recorder, traditional and contemporary folk, and Celtic music. Glyph was accustomed to prestigious stages, but was seeking deeper connections with people and nature, in settings that encouraged artistic experimentation.
Victoria and Glyph followed the pull of each other’s voices away from the crowd. Harmonies took shape in a dynamic that felt natural from the onset. As flow artists and jugglers brought the lawn to life, everything around them seemed to disappear.
A few months later, everything around them that night really did disappear. Victoria’s home, possessions, and all the commitments built around them, were destroyed in an electrical fire. From the devastating loss, a strange freedom emerged. With everything else gone, all that remained was the collaboration and connection Victoria and Glyph had imagined. They made a commitment: to build their future around making music together.

Imaginary Expedition’s classically-informed folk sound developed through a shared search for common ground between two different musical backgrounds. Before their collaborative project began, Victoria had toured with several classic rock tribute bands, and Glyph was performing regularly as a multi-instrumentalist in American-Celtic folk projects, and as a classical concert pianist.
Glyph’s personal interest lay in writing music with enough complexity to be rewarding to follow. With the command and versatility to make precise compositional choices, and a fondness for writing sonatas and fugues, Glyph values intricacy, and musical decisions that enhance each piece’s beauty, clarity, and emotional impact.
Victoria was used to keeping a catalogue of hit songs memorized for spontaneous use. This foundation in music beloved by people of many demographics gave Victoria a practical feel for accessible song forms, catchy melodies, relatable lyrics, and engaging delivery. This influence helps ensure that the duo's songs remain approachable and digestible.
Each new song asks Victoria and Glyph to reconcile their musical instincts. Their process is only complete when both have contributed equally to the music and lyrics, and when they are equally satisfied with the outcome. It remains an ongoing challenge to find a balance that feels inviting to a performer shaped by popular song craft, yet intricate enough to maintain the interest of a classical composer.
The duo was determined to make the process of developing a shared musical language enjoyable. Glyph and Victoria addressed this by making it portable, with guitars, ukuleles, recorders, and picnics packed into bicycle panniers. Expeditions exploring parks, forests, and shorelines led them to serene spots to sit and experiment, with the natural world as their writing room.

The guitar became central to the duo’s sound. Glyph, trained first as a pianist, was a relative beginner on six strings. Shaped by conservatory study that encouraged musicians to examine and reinvent technique, experimentation developed into a lap-style approach. This technique has formed the physical instrumental basis of the ensemble. It reverses the orientation of the fretting hand, incorporates the thumb as a fifth fretting finger, and enables extended harmonic and melodic possibilities.
Performances that draw people closer
Glyph and Victoria chose to design the duo for unamplified performances, consistent with chamber music, often choosing rooms where the audience can watch and listen up-close. They control the “mix” with their compositional and technical prowess, and the audience gets to hear the natural timbres directly from the voices and instruments. Their performances of well-crafted, well-rehearsed music without microphones ubiquitously have the effect of sending a considerable hush over the room, and inviting people in.

Imaginary Expedition is a Canadian project by choice. Victoria was born in Toronto, but spent a decade moving through creative communities abroad. Both Victoria and Glyph were living in the USA when they first crossed paths. At Imaginary Expedition’s inception in August 2024, the pair travelled to Toronto to share the setting of Victoria’s childhood. What began as a personal trip became a turning point: the city’s summer energy, folk scene, and artistic community inspired the decision to root their lives in the Canadian folk landscape.
A full and focused year was spent preparing for the relocation: completing the application for Glyph’s Canadian permanent residence, and writing music. By their arrival in Toronto in September 2025, they had a growing catalogue of original material. The duo postponed their first recordings until they were settled in Canada as part of ensuring their releases qualified as Canadian content.
Victoria and Glyph’s ability to tour without visas in both Canada and the United States gives Imaginary Expedition cross-border touring potential. Firmly based in Toronto, the project is positioned to contribute to Canada’s folk and acoustic music ecosystem while carrying distinctive Canadian work to international audiences.
