Blur Classification Guidelines

• • If an image has excessive pixelation or is completely blurry, flag the image.

  • If an image has shallow depth of field, bokeh, or other blur effects that artistically stylize the image but do not affect its readability, do not flag the image. 

Intentional Blur refers to artistic or stylistic use of blur

This includes:

• • Bokeh (dramatically out-of-focus background) 

  • Intentional motion blur (blurred person,  un-blurred background)

  • Depth-of-field (blurred foreground + background to draw attention to subject)

Unintentional Blur refers to unwanted or unappealing blur

This includes:

• • Camera shake (whole image is blurred in one general direction)

  • Entire photo out of focus (strawberry picture)

  • Subject of photo out of focus (picture of man in pub, bottom right)
