Week One

Welcome to Week One

This is our first week together in the ISTE Inclusive Learning Network book study. We'll read the first two chapters of the book this week. You can read as much or as little as you like, or can find the time to do. Jot ideas in a notebook, record your thoughts using an audio recorder, share a note on the shared Padlet, or send a message on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter using the #ILNBookStudy21.

We Have to Move!

This plea and call to action is the message Andratesha Frizgerald shares as we begin this week.

"We have to move! We have to change! We have to grow as learners to empower the learners in front of us."

As part of that change, we recognize that technologies are not neutral. As we keep this impassioned plea from Andratesha in mind, this book study is an opportunity to grow as learners. Our focus, as members and participants in this Inclusive Learning Network with ISTE, is on technologies that enhance and enable engagement, representation, and action and expression of our learners and teachers. This book study is an opportunity to change and move, with the help of some timely connections. This will enhance and extend our work on antiracism in education.

As part of the planning for this book study, we are not dictating specific tasks for each week. Rather, we provide choices for your engagement. Our suggested reading plan can be your reading plan. Our proposed activities can provoke or prompt you to engage with others, but you will decide how much and how often you will choose to share.

An Indisposable Invitation

Consider this your "indisposable invitation" to come together to read!

Antiracism and UDL begin with honor

UDL Self-Assessment

Try this UDL self assessment as shared on the Dive into UDL website. This tool may help with your goal setting and book study planning. This self assessment may build your understanding of UDL principles. There is no sign up required and your responses are anonymous. Your individual results are revealed and correct responses are provided.

Actions and activities

Considering the UDL framework focuses on engagement, representation, and action and expression within the parameters of access, build and internalize, this book study has choice and options laid out on a choice board page. Each week you can select one or two options from this choice board to suit your learning goals and drive your participation in this book study.

The choice board outlines some activities that follow the access, build, and internalize sequence from the UDL framework. Here are some quick links to some of the activities posted on the choice board:

  • contribute an introductory message or a quote from Chapters 1 & 2 from the book to a Padlet.

  • add a page to the Memorable Quotes book created in Google slides - consider multiple means of expression and provide links and alt text to images.

  • create a memorable quote image/poster using Canva - share this on either the Padlet or Google slides

  • share your memorable quote poster on social media - include the @InclusiveLN and #ILNBookStudy21 hashtag. Include @hj_dewaard, @KendraFGrant and @Ms_KatieNieves in your tweet.
