What is “suffrage’’?
Suffrage‘ means the right to vote in political elections.
During the history and still now people have restrictions based on things like age, gender, race, education, wealth and social status.During the 19th and 20th centuries, men in the UK had the right to vote but women did not. Many people – including women – didn’t believe that women should be able to vote
The suffragist movement
During the 19th and early 20th centuries, many women started to fight for their rights. They focus their attention on the right to vote. . These groups came to be known by two different nicknames, invented by some newspapers who wanted to ridicule them; the Suffragists and the Suffragettes.The two groups used very different tactics to draw attention to their cause but their message was the same. They wore the colours purple, white and green and made banners, badges and sashes with the words ‘Votes for Women‘ displayed on them.

Emmeline Pankhurst was one the most important supporter of women’s suffrage, and then her daughters: Christabel and Syliva,
Suffragettes and the law
A lot of Suffragettes were arrested for law-breaking and many went to prison where they had “unpleasant” procedure.
In 1918, women obtained the vote! They had to be over the age of 30 and own property, or be married to someone who owned property. It was a big victory.
