Coca-Cola has proudly produced beverages locally in Myanmar since June 2013, when Coca-Cola Pinya Beverages Myanmar (CCPBM) celebrated the inauguration of its first bottling plant in the country. Over the past five years, Coca-Cola has made substantial investments of more than US$200 million in new production lines, facilities, cold drink equipment, products and people development and will continue to invest in our local business.
CCPBM employs around 1,500 people locally in Myanmar and support more than 18,000 indirect employment opportunities across its value chain. CCPBM prioritizes the development of local staff by rolling out a comprehensive capability building program across all functions: sales, marketing, production and supply chain, admin, finance and IT. Since 2013, CCPBM provided more than 350,000 hours of learning and development initiatives for employees, including leadership training for our front-line managers and supervisors, extensive safety training including diverse topics such as food safety and defensive driving. Increasing the number of women in leadership roles is a priority for CCPBM, and programs have been developed to enable female talent to prepare for and reach leadership positions, such as influencing, communication, presentation skills and exploring their authentic way of leading and networking. Achieving gender balance and diversity in the workplace is a tap priority for CCPBM and Coca-Cola’s operations around the world.
Moreover, we had a strong presence throughout the year at university career fairs in order to interact with and recruit potential employees for the company. Our internship program helps CCPBM establish and maintain relationship with key universities in Myanmar and enhance CCPBM’s potential to recruit highly capable fresh graduates. In 2018, 36 students from key universities have been given internship opportunity and more than 20 plant tours were successfully hosted for public universities, private colleges and training institutes.
In the community, Coca-Cola has been partnering with Pact Myanmar on a women’s empowerment initiative, called Swan Yi, providing capacity building trainings focused on financial literacy, entrepreneurship and business management, providing women with skills to start or expand their own businesses. Since 2012, the program has empowered more than 40,000 women in Yangon, Mandalay and Sagaing Regions, as well as Shan and Mon State. Also, in partnership with Pact, Coca-Cola is bringing safe drinking water and basic sanitation infrastructure to more than 13,800 villagers in Myanmar, including 1,230 school children. Moreover, Coca-Cola has partnered with the INGO, World Vision (Myanmar), for water management program that not only provides safe drinking water and basic sanitation infrastructure at schools in Mandalay but also provides agricultural water to farmers in Seik Phyu township of Magway Region. We expanded the Coca-Cola “Leht Li” Business Skills Training Program in partnership with the International Labour Organization and Ministry of Industry’s Department of SME Development and until now we have trained more than 7000 retailers and SMEs and 120 trainings of trainers (TOTs) since we target 20,000 retailers & SMEs through 2020. CCPBM is also committed to supporting communities in times of need. In response to the flooding and natural disasters the past few years, Coca-Cola provided approximately US$350,000 in donations and in-kind support for relief and rebuilding efforts. As part of Coca-Cola’s global “World Without Waste” commitment with ambitious global targets made on packaging recovery, packaging innovation and also partnerships on recycling and packaging recovery initiatives around the world, CCPBM has recently initiated the “Tan Bo Shi Tal” campaign that aims to raise awareness on the importance of waste segregation and recycling. Moreover, Coca-Cola has supported initiatives to promote a clean environment and raising awareness on the importance of recycling, including the ‘Doh Eain’ garden alleyway revitalization project, Building Market’s project to scale up the waste collection and recycling rate and partnering with the social enterprise Hla Day to produce artisan crafts made from recycled Coca-Cola materials.
