Introduction

Deflate Gate was a huge controversy during the 2015 National Football League (NFL) playoffs. The New England Patriots, and in particular, Tom Brady, were accused of deliberately deflating footballs to gain an advantage against the Indianapolis Colts. It appeared that several of the Patriots' game balls were intentionally deflated to make them easier to throw, grip, and catch. The Patriots denied any wrong doing, but according to an analysis done by Exponent, the loss of air pressure in the footballs was attributed to human interference. The scientists at Exponent used the Ideal Gas Law to make their determination in the cheating scandal. Subsequently, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots were punished and the process for monitoring football pressure was changed by the NFL.
