Technical Visit

Kochi Coast Protection

The coastal levee along Kochi coast is the key structure to protect the life and properties of local residents in case the future massive earthquake whose seismic center is Nankai Trough occurs. Required to perform as levees, they are not deformed by liquefaction in an earthquake and tenaciously resist against Tsunami overflow. As the existing levees were considered not to have performed the required function, a counter measurement was essential and the reinforcement of the levee has been conducted at a rapid pace.

The Implant levee constructed by the GIKEN G.R.B System as a noise & vibration-free piling method was adopted, keeping the function of both the existing levees and arterial roads. Since 2012, approximately 10 Press-in machines have been piling 8,500 Steel tubular piles (1,000 dia. & 10.0-24.5m length) and 3,820 steel sheet piles (U shaped & 15.0-23.0m length) in the 19.0 km linear meter area along the coast.

*In this visit, the technical video will be showed in the shuttle bus during the move to the Kochi coast and you can look at the renovated levees on-site.

Kochi Head Office, GIKEN LTD.

GIKEN LTD. developed the Silent Piler which was the first ever practical piling machine using the Press-in principle to virtually eliminate noise and vibration. As a leading company on the Press-in method, various facilities have been kept expanding to implement continuously for enhancement of the Press-in technology.
