The Mini Mars Exhibit began its development toward the end of spring, 2019. The location of the exhibit is on the first floor of the Science & Technology (S&T) building at Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI). The purpose was to develop a small test bed for students to develop rover technologies that may be used later in the Mars yard. SIPI students have successfully duplicated the technology that is going to be used in the Mars yard, but the terrain will remain carpeted in the Mini Mars yard for testing and evaluating rovers since it offers increased load to the drive motors that may be seen on rugged terrain.
The Mini Mars Exhibit is also a stage where guests can view or play with various robots in a simple environment. It has a view from the hallway so onlookers may view rover testing in the arena or visitors may enter in and speak with students about their robot. One noticeable feature that can be seen in the Mini Mars Exhibit are the AprilTags on the floor. The tags provide a logical barrier to the rovers when scanned by their onboard camera. These AprilTags provide the rovers with information about the zone and tells them to avoid or approach the area.
