Below are the learning engineering (LE) scenario and the learning engineering activity plan for the interactive session. Discuss the learning objectives and prompts as you read the scenario with your group members.
Learning objectives:
Participants will use a learning engineering activity plan to understand the needs, goals, and challenges of teachers, students, and other stakeholders tasked with implementing the new curriculum or redesigning the existing curriculum.
Participants will use a human-centered design to align curriculum and/or individual lessons to inform successive rounds of improvement.
*Scenario:
The district administration has identified that high school graduates are unprepared for college-level writing courses. The English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum committee along with the teachers is tasked with redesigning the instructional goals and learning activities for grades 9-12 to better prepare students for university writing and 21st-century careers. Recognizing the impact of Generative AI (GenAI), the committee and teachers aim to integrate the advancements of GenAI into the new curriculum. They will start working on a learning engineering activity plan to identify the main challenge in the learning engineering (LE) process and various LE process model action items.
In this scenario, you can decide to be part of:
- a team designing a new writing curriculum,
- or be a teacher designing new writing model lessons with other teachers.
When working on the scenario, consider the following:
Based on the scenario,
how will you start the LE process? What LE process would you like to consider/try/use? And why would you consider or use them, given your scenario?
what do you already know about the users/learners in the assigned scenario? What will you need to learn about your users/learners? What variations do you imagine across your users/learners?
what will you need to learn about the context/environment they will be learning? (Don’t forget to identify affordances/opportunities and constraints).
how might you work with different stakeholders/people in the chosen scenario while designing? How do you imagine assembling a team? What influence will they have on the design?
what human-centered design or approach might you consider during the learning engineering process?
Assign a recorder within the group and when each group has completed the "LE Activity Plan," all members are encouraged to share their answers and develop a shared response to submit in the Google Forms.

The Learning Engineering Activity Plan
To start working on the scenario, consider using the learning engineering activity plan and a list of key questions. Each question is based on the learning engineering process. Below are the two learning engineering action plan activity documents:
